So the plot in these chapters is doing something really interesting and I want to unpack it. On the surface, it's a simple scene: Shen Zijin asks for recipes, Rong Li helps him generously, then she brings soup to Zhan Qin and he refuses it. But the SUBTEXT is where the plot actually lives. First, that prickling sensation on Rong Li's back. Someone is watching her. She turns and sees Zhan Qin. Is he watching her because he cares? Because he's suspicious? Because he's been following her? The text never confirms it, and that ambiguity is deliberate. The author wants us to wonder. Second, the soup refusal. Zhan Qin has every reason to accept—it's a gesture of goodwill, it's food, it's from HER. But he refuses. And then suggests Shen Zijin take it. This isn't just coldness. This is a pattern. Something is going on between them that the reader hasn't fully seen yet, and the author is doling it out in tiny drops. Third—and this is the plot twist that got me—the author's note at the end teases a completely different story. 'After Tempting the Aloof Imperial Brother' with Ji Yue and Ji Ning. Pseudo-incest, obsessive heir apparent, timid stuttering princess. The tone shifts dramatically from the warm, grounded scene we just read to something darker and more intense. It's a hard pivot but it makes me want to read BOTH stories now. The main plot thread here is clearly building tension between Rong Li and Zhan Qin. Every interaction is charged, every silence heavy. I'm obsessed.
Okay, let me just say this first — Qi Yaoyao is the kind of character who makes you want to throw the book across the room. Like, genuinely. She climbs down from her bunk, demands a pancake, gets told ten yuan, huffs off to the dining car (which she can't be bothered to walk through because ugh, the feet), comes back, and then — this is the part that made me actually gasp out loud — she TRICKS a little girl out of her pancake with two fucking candies. Two candies! The girl has to whisper "you can't tell Grandma" like she's committing a crime. And then Qi Yaoyao looks at Qin Nian like SHE'S the one who won something. "See? If you won't sell to me, someone else will." The audacity is off the charts. But here's the thing that made me laugh out loud — the old woman drugged that pancake, didn't she? Because Qi Yaoyao sleeps through a ROBBERY. Three armed men, knives, screaming, and this girl is out cold for two days. I'm not saying the grandmother is definitely a trafficker accomplice, but the timing is SO suspicious. They get off at the next stop, the traffickers are gone, and Qi Yaoyao is still unconscious. Coincidence? Maybe. But Qin Nian definitely thinks not, and honestly, neither do I. And then — and THIS is the best part — when they finally arrive at Yang City and Qin Nian shakes her awake, Qi Yaoyao stumbles, Lin Guodong catches her (a soldier, no less, from her own father's unit), and she SCREAMS "Help! Someone's molesting me!" Like, bro. You ate a drugged pancake you stole from a little girl and you're accusing a man who literally just saved you from falling on your face? The crowd's reaction was so satisfying. "That soldier should've just let you fall and break your neck." I was cheering. Also, she bumps into Dou Dou on her way out and doesn't even look back. Qin Nian's thought — "Better to have let her be taken by the traffickers" — was my exact thought too.
