I need to talk about Zhou Shanshan because WOW. This character is the perfect example of how someone can seem like your best friend while secretly plotting to destroy your life. The original host's revelation about their friendship is genuinely heartbreaking—she paid Zhou Shanshan TWO YUAN A MONTH to cook for her, did her chores during her period, and in return Zhou Shanshan told everyone the original host was lazy and spoiled. Like. What. And the worst part? The original host kept helping because she thought they were friends. 'A true friend hopes the other lives well,' Song Wanyue says, and it hits different because she's talking about someone who literally tried to steal her husband AND her family's money and connections. The dynamic between Song Wanyue and Zhou Shanshan is so rich because it's not just about revenge—it's about the death of innocence. The original host was soft, kind, gullible. Song Wanyue is watching that softness die in real time and it's painful but necessary. And then there's the Gu family, which is its own mini soap opera. Gu Weimin is this man who lost his position as brigade leader and immediately starts trying to force his adult sons to give up their share of the property so he can live with his mistress Zhou Lanhua and her bastard children. The audacity. 'They all have the same father—there's no difference between legitimate and illegitimate sons.' Sir, you are a village man in 1970s China quoting Confucian family values while literally having an affair with a widow? The hypocrisy is off the charts. But what's fascinating is how each son reacts. Gu Dahai is all 'I'm not leaving, this is MY home' while secretly calculating how much property he'll get. Gu Dalin is more direct about wanting his share. They're all greedy, but they're also smart—they know their father's fall from power means the family fortune might disappear, so they have to protect themselves. And Zhou Shanshan? She's trapped between her own schemes backfiring and realizing that Song Wanyue now holds all the cards. When she asks 'are we still good friends?' after being slapped twice, I wanted to scream at the page. No. No you are not. But that's the tragedy of it—Zhou Shanshan genuinely doesn't understand why their friendship ended. She thinks the problem is that the original host was 'too easy to trick, too soft-hearted.' She still doesn't get it. That's what makes her such a compelling villain—she's not evil because she's evil, she's evil because she's selfish and entitled and she genuinely believes the world owes her something.
The dialogue in this section is genuinely sharp. Let me just drop some lines that stuck with me. Jiang Mingyue: "Luo Mingzhong, you disgust me." — four words, maximum impact. No explanation, no pleading. Just done. Her calculation of the money: "I spent one hundred and twenty yuan a year, and six hundred yuan in five years... if you want it, I'll give you an IOU when I leave, and I'll pay you back when I have money." This is the kind of cold, precise dialogue that shows she's not just emotionally detached — she's mathematically done. She's calculated exactly what she's owed and what she owes, and she's settling the ledger. Wen Ning's fake sweetness: "Why don't I help you say something to him when he comes back at night, and tell him not to be angry." The fact that the narrator describes her smile as "harmless to humans and animals" tells you everything. This author doesn't need characters to announce they're villains. Luo Mingzhong's mother: "Son, divorce her, anyway, that little girl isn't your daughter, it's good enough that you've supported her for so many years." This is the kind of dialogue that makes your blood boil. She's so casual about it, so matter-of-fact about discarding her son's wife of five years. And the internal monologue moments — "Having been reborn, what the hell did she need love for? Wasn't making money better?" — this is the narrative voice speaking directly to the reader, and it's got this perfect blend of bitterness and determination. The author's voice throughout is really distinctive. It's not flowery or pretentious. It's direct, sometimes brutal, always moving forward. The dialogue feels natural because each character has a clear voice: Luo Mingzhong's arrogance, Wen Ning's fake sweetness, the mother's cold pragmatism, Jiang Mingyue's growing steel.
Just trying to get a free fast pass.. don’t mind but this book is pretty good so far. Can’t put down since I started reading.. so don’t mind this post.. thank you..
The plot and story was engaging and readable.???
A book has great potential. But some parts feel stiff. And pacing is good but it could be better, Other than that the world building is amazing. The characters are developed well, the party was flesh out just in 5 chapters.
This novel and its parts are well-developed. The characters are real and seem to jump out of the page. The writer's expression is of very high order and the flow of the story pacy. I very highly recommend this author. I have to say the author is very accomplished.
Story is well written, and has quite a bit of future potential. Just remember this though, if you yourself, enjoy writing your stories, then that is the one thing that should matter the most more then anything else. Sometimes, it is not about any sort of money or payment, but should in fact, always be about enjoying sharing your work with your viewers and fans. And that, should always take priority, because if your fans and viewers enjoy reading your work, as well as potential future generations, then that is the one thing, that should matter more to you then anything else. For you see, people are more concerned in living in the here and now. While people me, we like to have a more, long game in mind. Now, don't take this as some sort of negative by any means, I am just saying, that if we want future generations to enjoy this world, then we have to be willing to protect what we love, in an effort to do our best to better our future.
interesting to read and different from others.
Read up only up to 4th chapter and I’m already hooked? The way author wrote it is really good specially the chap 1 about the farewell to her mother? still not over it damn. It’s a good book overall, a must read one hehe
I can see the author put a lot of thinking in writing the noble. It is not some another stupid story about some face slapping or some other stupid stuff. It is refreshing to read this.
