I need to talk about Xu Shuyao because this girl is absolutely fascinating and I think the author is setting her up as someone nobody in this story fully understands yet. Let me just quote the passage that sold me: 'The young lady sat properly, quiet and composed, yet distinct from everyone else... she appeared like unpolished jade, naturally refined.' That description isn't just about her looks—it's about her entire presence. When Liu Qingwan tries to throw her under the bus by asking her about the heir's whereabouts, Xu Shuyao doesn't flinch. She delivers the message perfectly, shows zero girlish shyness when discussing Xiao Mo, and completely defuses the situation. Liu Qingwan's internal reaction says it all: 'For the first time, she realized this seemingly quiet cousin was far more formidable than she appeared.' And then there's this heartbreaking moment where Xu Shuyao watches the maternal exchange between Madam Ruan and Shen Jingshu and is suddenly transported back to her own mother—chasing butterflies, her mother sewing under the veranda, those simple moments of being a cherished daughter. 'It's all in vain,' Liu Qingwan murmurs behind her. The fact that Liu Qingwan notices Xu Shuyao's sorrow and chooses to comment on it rather than offer comfort tells us everything about their relationship dynamic. Meanwhile, the Old Madam is watching Xiao Mo with this knowing expression, noting that he smiled twice when speaking to Xu Shuyao. Someone in this household sees more than they're letting on.
Let me just say this — the stakes in this story are NEVER low. Even in the quiet moments, you feel like something is about to collapse. Take the opening scene with the fabric shop. On the surface, it's just haggling over sixty wen. But read between the lines and it's about survival. Bai Qianqian has three cakes left in her basket. She hasn't eaten enough. She's calculating every coin because one wrong move means winter comes and they freeze. The shopkeeper knows this — he can see she's willing to walk away empty-handed, which means he's the one who needs this sale more. That power shift is delicious. Then the clan confrontation hits and the stakes go from financial to existential. If Bai Qianqian loses this argument, she doesn't just lose face — she loses Anyao. The elders explicitly say they'll go to the Bai residence and demand an explanation. In this world, that means separation. It means he goes back to a family that has been trying to get rid of him since day one. But the author keeps raising the bar even after she wins. The roof is leaking. The weather is turning. She has no steady income after spending her savings on repairs and clothes. She sends Anyao inside because she's worried he'll get sick — and he wilts without her. The conflict doesn't end with the clan scene; it just changes shape. From public humiliation to private desperation. What makes this work so well is that the author never lets you forget what's at stake. Every small victory — the shoes, the repaired roof, the full payment — is undercut by the next threat. Winter is coming. The village still doesn't trust her. The Zhao family is fuming. You finish each chapter feeling like you've won a battle but the war is far from over. And that's exactly why I can't stop reading.

Greetings! I really liked the premise of this novel, and I think it would improve much more if a grammar checker is used in helping in the editing part. All in all, everything is good.
