I have to talk about the dialogue in this novel because it's genuinely exceptional and I don't say that lightly. Every character has a voice so distinct that I could identify who's speaking just from the way they phrase things. Let me start with Pei Jingchuan because his dialogue is a study in controlled hostility. 'There won't be a next time.' Four words that contain an entire universe of rejection. He doesn't yell, he doesn't explain, he doesn't even raise his voice. The power of his dialogue comes from what he refuses to say. When he tells Bai Yi about Jiang Mei, his retort is cold and precise: 'She married a poor scholar and works hard every day just to make ends meet, yet she willingly climbed into bed to save that poor scholar from imprisonment. Have you ever seen a scoundrel like her?' The irony is almost unbearable — he's defending the woman he just rejected, and he does it in a way that sounds like contempt but is actually devotion. His dialogue is always layered like this, and it rewards rereading. Zhou Hongyuan's voice is completely different — warm, earnest, slightly naive but never stupid. 'Meiniang, marrying me has made you suffer.' He says this after she's clearly moved by his gesture, and instead of reading her emotion, he reads his own inadequacy. His dialogue is full of promises and aspirations: 'I will ensure you travel by carriage, never go hungry or cold again.' It's almost painfully sincere, and that sincerity is what makes him so tragically vulnerable. The author never lets him sound cynical or self-aware, which is exactly right for a man who is about to be devastated. Zhao Xingzhi's dialogue is where the author shows her skill with social satire. 'Fool!' he snaps at his wife, and then launches into a lecture about Pei family prestige that is so casually cruel it's almost funny. 'To even meet him once is a blessing from three lifetimes.' The way he talks down to his pregnant wife in front of strangers, then immediately pivots to warning everyone about 'watching your words and actions' — his dialogue reveals everything about his character without the author ever needing to narrate his flaws. He's the kind of man who thinks he's being gracious while being utterly intolerable. Wu Fangyan's dialogue is surprisingly sharp for a character who seems designed to be the 'nice pregnant wife.' Her observation 'Young Master Pei's presence is indeed formidable. It's quite intimidating' sounds innocent but carries a hint of social commentary. And her envy when she sees Zhou Hongyuan wiping Jiang Mei's hands? The author conveys her entire emotional state through a single glance — no dialogue needed. Jiang Mei's dialogue is the most restrained of all, and that's intentional. She speaks carefully, diplomatically, always aware of the social minefield she's navigating. 'It was my lack of courage that frightened me. Madam kindly helped me out. If Young Master Zhao must blame someone, blame me.' This is a woman who has learned to defuse danger with self-deprecation, and it's heartbreaking because we know it's a survival mechanism, not genuine humility. The narrative voice itself is worth discussing. It's close third person, primarily anchored to Jiang Mei's perspective, but it occasionally shifts to give us Pei Jingchuan's internal state. The author's prose is economical — she doesn't over-describe emotions but lets dialogue and action carry the weight. When Jiang Mei's 'fingertips were stinging from the heat' of the chestnuts, that's not just sensory detail; it's the narrative voice finding the perfect physical equivalent for an emotional moment. One thing I want to highlight is how the author uses silence as dialogue. Pei Jingchuan's '...' when Bai Yi says the wrong thing. Jiang Mei's inability to speak when Zhou Hongyuan asks if the chestnuts are good. These moments of withheld speech are often more powerful than any words could be.
