This story is about so much more than revenge, and I think the central symbol here is the mourning attire. Xiao Fuguang shows up in mourning clothes. Not to apologize. Not to beg. To bid farewell—to her father, to her brother, and to the woman she was before she was reborn. The Gu family thinks she's there to mourn with them. She's actually there to mourn the death of her old self and announce her rebirth. The memorial tablets are equally powerful. Madam Xiao holding General Xiao's tablet while confronting the Gu family—it's like her dead husband is literally present, watching, judging. 'If not for the old ties between our families, what I hold in these hands today would not be my husband's memorial tablet.' She's saying: my husband's spirit is right here, and he is NOT happy. Then there's the funeral procession itself. In a culture where funeral rites are sacred, bringing a funeral procession to a divorce confrontation is absolutely revolutionary. It transforms a private family matter into a public, almost spiritual event. The Gu family can't dismiss it as 'marital discord' when coffins and memorial tablets are involved. Death sanctifies the accusation. And the divorce decree from the Regent? That's another layer—the state recognizing what the family refused to do: that Xiao Fuguang's marriage was not just broken, it was murderous. The 'mutual divorce' is framed as justice, not just legal separation. The story keeps asking: what do we owe the dead? And the answer seems to be: everything. Their dignity, their truth, their vengeance. Xiao Fuguang isn't just fighting for herself—she's fighting for the brothers who died because of Gu Chuan's betrayal.
Can we just talk about the dialogue in this section because the floral shirt guy's voice is SO distinct I immediately knew it was him even without the narration. "Hey, buddy. The lady asked you to let go. Didn't you hear her?" Lazy. Amused. Completely unbothered. And then he goes full absurd with "Well, I know your dad—does that mean I can slap you?" This man is clearly not a normal person and I am obsessed. Compare that to Zhao Mingyuan's dialogue and it's night and day. Zhao sounds desperate and whiny: "Yining, just say a word for me, just one word." Repetitive. Needy. His dialogue has no confidence behind it even though he's being physically aggressive. Wen Yining's lines are all restraint—"Zhao Mingyuan, let go first. I'll go find her and ask how she feels, alright?" She's trying to be reasonable with someone who doesn't deserve reasonableness. And Xi Yu? He barely speaks at all in this section. Just actions. Sipping whiskey. Nodding. His silence is its own kind of dialogue. The narration itself has this dry, observant tone that matches Xi Yu's internal state—detached but precise. "The man with glasses was still there. He had let go of Wen Yining's wrist, but he hadn't left." That's not emotional language. That's factual. But it hurts more than if the narrator had said "Xi Yu felt a pang of something he refused to name." The author trusts the reader to feel it. That's good writing.
I love this novel. And the things I like is the way it is written. And the thing I like the most, ohhohohoo.... is the chapter titles, I just love it.Don't get me wrong, I have read many novels to the point where how the story will unfold is already playing in my head, so what I do is, I skip reading unnecessary words, sentences, sometimes even a few paragraphs. But while reading this novel, I still get the flow of story accurately but the sentencing and the way of writing is way too much of my liking that I don't want to skip any words let alone sentences. In fact there are some instances where I scrolled and skipped a paragraph and I know what's written in it, but still went back to read it word by word.haaah... a very good work author, hats off to you

I don't think there are words to describe how much I liked the novel and the emptiness I felt after completing it.The way the story's written is so good, with information on the world slowly being unraveled as we explore it along with the mc just keeps you anticipating and speculating about what might happen next.
