Okay so let's talk about Wen Youan because this guy is absolutely unhinged and I cannot stop thinking about him. The scene where he's lying on the ground after she basically rejects him but then she says 'okay' and his face just BREAKS INTO A SMILE? That is some next-level emotional whiplash right there. He's playing the victim, he's carving wooden figurines of himself at midnight, he's following her around like a very persistent golden retriever who also happens to be a political player. And the worst part? I kind of respect it. He's not pretending to be some noble, dignified love interest. He's just out here being aggressively devoted while fully aware that she knows he's performing. The moment where he says "I deeply dislike Yang Yu. She's just talking nonsense, trying to sow discord between us" while simultaneously tugging at her clothes like a neglected child — this man has no self-awareness and yet somehow it works? Meanwhile Shi Ruyi is sitting there like "do you want everyone to see this embarrassing scene?" and I'm just screaming. She's so done with him but also clearly affected by the wooden figurine. She even admits it was "much quieter than Wen Youan" which is the most backhanded compliment in literary history. And then there's Yang Yu — this girl is out here trying to flirt with Wen Youan at his own grandmother's birthday party and he literally tells her to shut up. The audacity. The absolute audacity. I need to know what his endgame is though. Is he genuinely devoted or is this all part of some scheme? Because Shi Ruyi clearly thinks he's a liar — "she subconsciously felt that he was lying again" — but then she also seems to genuinely want to believe him. This dynamic is so deliciously toxic and I'm here for it.
Okay so the way the author paints this 1960s military compound setting is actually insane. You can literally feel the weight of the era pressing down on everything. Like, the whole vibe of Zhao Daxiong's study — where he corners Zhao Xiaoyu and lays into her — it's not just a room, it's a power play. The door closing, the documents on the desk, the cold authority in his voice. You can see the shadows. And then later, when Sheng Qianyu walks into the vice dean's office, that tension is palpable. The author doesn't need to describe much — just the fact that the dean is away on inspection, that she has to go to the vice dean instead, that she's weighing her options — and suddenly you're in that moment, heart pounding. The world feels lived-in. The military compound isn't just backdrop, it's a character itself. Those boys doing core training and ideological refinement? That's not just worldbuilding, that's the whole social ecosystem. And the Agricultural Sciences Institute — the labs, the sweet potato research, the political undertones — it all feels so grounded. The author could've made this feel like a costume drama, but instead it feels like you could walk into these rooms. How does one author make a 1960s Chinese academic institution feel this real without info-dumping?
