Let me talk about the family portrait because I cannot stop thinking about it. The large photo from fifteen or twenty years ago—Su family head, first wife, two children. Then the smaller photo taken this year after Su Zhisheng was brought back. The first wife's photo is literally larger. The new family photo is smaller. The space where Hu Xiuchun's photo should be is... occupied by a smaller version. The author keeps coming back to this image like it's a thesis statement. A portrait is supposed to capture truth, right? But every photo in this house is a lie. The large photo shows a perfect family that never really existed—the first wife is dead, the children are switched, the love is performative. The smaller photo is supposed to show the "new" happy family, but it's physically smaller, a visual admission that Hu Xiuchun's position is inferior. Even the photography is hierarchy. And then there's Su Zhisheng in the large photo as a baby—"his face red, wrinkled, and not yet fully formed." He was there from the beginning and still doesn't belong. His biological father couldn't even tell his own child was switched. The portrait doesn't lie—the family is broken. The photos are just trying to convince everyone otherwise. The yellow sweater is another symbol that got me. It's hand-knitted, intricate, made with time and patience—everything the Su family isn't. It's yellow, which is warm, bright, alive. And it's meant for winter. Su Yingmei is planning for a future she might not survive to see, making something warm for the son she loves. Meanwhile the Su family's entire existence is about appearances—photos, public apologies, engagement banquets on lawns. They have warmth but no heat. They have images but no substance. The novel keeps asking: what makes a family? Blood? Photos? Money? Or the person who knits you a sweater in August because winter is coming?
Can we talk about how distinct every character's voice is in these chapters? Because the dialogue here is genuinely excellent and I want to highlight a few moments. Jiang Liyang's dialogue is immediately recognizable—aggressive, entitled, performative. "Open your eyes—your cousin isn't here. Put away that stench of yours!" This isn't just mean; it's specifically mean in a way that tells you everything about his character. He's used to getting his way, he's performative with his cruelty, and he has no idea how to handle someone who won't perform the submission he expects. Then there's Fan Ning, and her voice is completely different. "Yes, I struck Jiang Liyang!" She steps forward to shield Luo Xinci and just owns it. No hesitation, no excuse-making. This girl has a strong sense of justice and the dialogue reflects that—direct, forthright, a little blunt. Ming Yuhe's dialogue is sparse but loaded. "Liyang did wrong—he deserved the beating." Three words, no elaboration, and it tells us everything about how he sees the world. He doesn't perform kindness; he states facts. And Jiang Xie's dialogue is full of hesitation and deflection. He can't even ask about the Marquis directly—"That matter—have you found any clues?" trails off into "Nothing… I meant Grandmother's birthday is coming soon." The man can't speak his mind to save his life, and the dialogue makes that painfully clear. Every character sounds like themselves. No generic "novel voice" here.
Can we talk about how good the dialogue is in this novel? Because I've read transmigration stories where every character sounds the same, but here? Every voice is distinct and I can tell who's speaking without even looking at the dialogue tags. Song Wanyue's lines are cold, precise, and devastating. 'You? Deserve it? When you schemed against me, did you ever think for my sake?' That's not just dialogue—that's a verdict. She doesn't waste words. She doesn't need to raise her voice. Each sentence is a calculated strike. And the way she switches between Chinese and English in her internal monologue? 'Thick-skinned shameless thing'—that's the original host's voice bleeding through, the voice of someone who was raised to be polite and kind, watching as Song Wanyue dismantles it piece by piece. Zhou Shanshan's dialogue is equally well-crafted, but in the opposite direction. She's always pleading, always trying to manipulate, always framing herself as the victim. 'Wanyue, we were such good friends. It's only ten yuan—can't you just give it to me?' The desperation in her voice is palpable. She genuinely doesn't understand why her tactics aren't working anymore. And then there's Gu Weimin, who says things like 'They all have the same father—there's no difference between legitimate and illegitimate sons' with absolutely zero guilt. That line tells you everything about what kind of man he is. He's not evil in a cartoonish way—he's evil in a banal, everyday way. He genuinely believes his own justification. The dialogue between the sons and their father is also great. Gu Dahai's 'I'm not leaving. If you want that vixen Zhou Lanhua and her bastards to move in, I'll be the first to refuse' has this perfect mix of defiance and self-interest. He's not standing up for justice—he's standing up for property. And the narration itself has a voice that's both wry and warm. When Song Wanyue thinks about how she 'got so happy counting her money that she suddenly died'—that's dark humor at its finest. The author can be serious when the scene demands it, but there's always this undercurrent of wit that keeps things from getting too heavy. Even the scene where Song Wanyue buys the old hen has dialogue that feels natural and lived-in. Grandma Xie's warning about other villagers coming to ask for meat? That's not exposition—that's character. It tells us about the village dynamics, about Song Wanyue's reputation, and about the practical challenges of her situation, all in one exchange. The author trusts the reader to pick up on subtext, and that's what makes the dialogue so satisfying.
I have read up to chapter 16 as of writing this review. I like it. .......................................................................................................
I hope the witch will play a bigger role in the upcoming chapters! And also Nikolai, I don't like him but he's pretty strong too, I hope our beloved ML gets him
Author is this dropped? Cause it was actually a good story
Shameless author moment! Yes, it’s me, **Void42**, here to shamelessly hype up my own creation. If you’re craving a fantasy adventure that’s equal parts heart-pounding action, swoon-worthy romance, and mind-bending multiverse chaos, then *Voidbound Ascension* is your next obsession. Think epic battles, intricate world-building, and a harem that’ll keep you guessing who’ll win the protagonist’s heart (or if they’ll survive long enough to find out). Comparisons to other great works are inevitable, but *Voidbound Ascension* stands on its own with twists you won’t see coming and surprises packed into every chapter. Dive into a world where nothing is as it seems, and every decision ripples across dimensions. Fall in love, get addicted, and let me, your favorite storyteller, **Void42**, scratch that magical itch you’ve been searching for in the light novel world. Ready to lose yourself in the Void? Let’s ascend together!
Overall, it's a good story so far. Personally, it's a bit too fast-paced for me, but im aware a lot of readers enjoy that, so it isn't a negative objectively. Shes overpowered as heck, author is touching on some interesting themes i certainly didnt expect which is always nice to see. Overall well done and I can definitely see the story getting up there in popularity. ?
It's a good book considering it's his first book but there should be a little bit of romance for the ladies....... and a consistent updates I'm still waiting for today's updates
I read TLAD, it was kinda good, I enjoyed it, but no updates? you stop writing it and then I find you writing another book, but okay, well i mean dreamscapes feels better paced but c'mon man, at least update both of them. jk, very good novel though, cheers
