He gets shut out, plucks a leaf in anger, runs into his half-brother, and the whole scene plays out like a petty family soap opera. Then we cut to Shi Ruyi at home, exhausted from the Lantern Festival, remembering she hasn't finished the hairpin. The pace slows down significantly. We get this quiet, almost domestic scene of her carving by candlelight, bleeding, dreaming. It is a complete tonal shift from the Su family drama and it works because the emotional stakes are different. The Su scenes are about power and manipulation. This scene is about something she won't name. Then boom — birthday morning, she oversleeps, rushes to the General's Mansion, Wen Youan is waiting, the embrace, the gift, the finger scene. The pace accelerates again and ends on this really intimate moment that changes everything between them. What I appreciate is that the author doesn't rush the Shi Ruyi-Wen Youan moments. The build-up from the carving all night to the actual gift exchange takes up a significant portion of the chapter. We feel the weight of her staying up, the dream, the oversleeping panic. It earns the payoff. And the Su family subplot doesn't feel tacked on — it establishes Su Huaiqing as a real threat while also giving us a break from the romantic tension. Good structural choices here.
