The birthday banquet scene is honestly one of the most densely layered sequences I've read in a while. On the surface, it's just a family celebration — firecrackers lasting the duration of one incense stick, over a hundred taels of silver spent, a flowing banquet from morning until night. But peel back one layer and you find the entire economic and social structure of this world laid bare. The contrast between the two branches is rendered through such specific, tactile details. Father Huo brings two packages of pastries and two jin of pork — and Old Lady Huo doesn't even glance at it. Meanwhile, Eldest Aunt Huo wears gold and silver all year round and makes several new sets of clothes every year. The land situation is brutal: over two hundred mu total, and the Second Branch got exactly one mu. The house was bought with their own money. When Father Huo injured his ankle, they had no silver for a doctor. This isn't just favoritism — it's systemic economic strangulation dressed up as family tradition. Then there's the Liang family arrival. The richest family in Huojia Village now, having overtaken the Huos after moving in. Both families produced scholars, both participating in the provincial examination — this is the kind of detail that makes you realize the author has built an entire social ecosystem, not just a backdrop. The provincial examination isn't mentioned once as decoration; it's woven into the family's economic calculations, the marriage arrangements, the power dynamics. Ning Yuqiao's tour of Ning Yuchan's west courtyard is a masterclass in showing character through environment. 'Not a single place could compare to the Liang family.' The physical space tells you everything about where each sister ended up and why. Ning Yuqiao's relief that she wasn't the one married into poverty, her clicking her tongue at the Second Branch's poverty — all of it is filtered through her visual assessment of the physical world around her. The Dayang Village sequence with Old Man Ning's cellar full of radishes and stored lard is another standout. Early spring, not many green vegetables — this is a specific seasonal detail that grounds the story in a real agricultural rhythm. The dumpling filling made from radishes, lard, and fat residue sounds honestly delicious, and the fact that Ning Yuchan has been craving it shows how much she misses home despite being married into a household. Even the medicine shop scene has its own texture. Doctor Yang sniffing the plaster, admitting his limitations, then thinking of his friend who applied for imperial physician — this is worldbuilding through professional networks, showing you how medical knowledge actually flows in this world. It's not just 'a doctor helps'; it's a chain of connections, reputations, and geographic movement between village and city. The seating arrangement at the banquet — men and women separated, but the Huo family deliberately putting the Ning sisters together — that single detail about social manipulation through spatial arrangement is the kind of thing that makes you realize how calculated every interaction is in this household.
Okay so this prologue hits different because it opens with a CRIME SCENE. Like, a seven-year-old boy witnesses his father murder his mother and he just... reports it to the police? The text says it straight up: "A child of only seven… yet he had such a chilling, soul-piercing gaze." And then the very next scene, we meet this guy Shi Yan who is literally described with the exact same visual cues — pitch-black eyes, perfectly straight back, this cold unreadable stare. I literally did a double-take. Is this the boy? Has he grown up to be this terrifyingly beautiful man? Because the parallel is SO thick I can barely breathe. The plot is setting up this whole dual timeline situation — we have Ruan Zhizhi's present day life (reporter internship, unrequited love for Li Sichen, the Yunnan trip) and this cold case from seven years ago that's clearly going to collide with it. The businessman who planned his wife's murder flawlessly, only to be caught by his own son... that's the kind of detail that's going to matter later. I just know it. Also the Li Sichen subplot is interesting — five years of secret Weibo stalking, he posted "A City, I'm back" and suddenly her whole world tilts. Classic setup for a love triangle or maybe a love square at this point. The author is layering mysteries like an onion and I am HERE for it.
I need to talk about Qin Zichuan because WOW. This guy is genuinely infuriating and I love how the author doesn't even try to make him sympathetic. He hears Tongtong fell, sees Mianmian standing there, and immediately assumes she's the bully. No questions, no evidence, just pure prejudice because their mom disappeared after Mianmian was born. The scene where he tosses three-and-a-half-year-old Mianmian into her room and slams the door? I actually gasped. And the worst part? When Qin Yunchuan confronts him, Zichuan literally says: "I'd rather not have this sister! It's because of her birth that our mother disappeared." That is such a toxic, baseless thing to project onto a TODDLER. Meanwhile, Tongtong is over there playing the victim, crying fake tears, and Zichuan is handing her twenty thousand yuan like she's some delicate flower. The favoritism is so blatant it's almost comedic. But here's what makes it interesting: Mianmian's reaction. She doesn't break down. She just gets mad. "Qin Zichuan, big dummy!" She's literally stomping her foot and swearing at him. That's such a cute, realistic kid response. She's hurt but she's also not going to just accept it. And then the tabby cat running to find Qin Yunchuan? That little detail showed how smart Mianmian is—she didn't just cry, she found a way to get help.

I just finished reading your book, and I have to say, it’s absolutely fantastic! I truly enjoyed it. I’d love to offer a few tips that might help boost the performance and visibility of your book even more. I believe these could take your work to the next level
So far this is one of the books I’ve read that I’ve definitely add to my fav list. For anyone who’s seeing this review of mine, just read even chap 1 and I promise you won’t be able to stop??
Upload more please! I like the tension between the two leads. I'm really hoping Kane would forgive King but idunno, I'm just so happy that I found a bl book like this. Exactly what I really want to read these days.
Big fan of your books glad you’re working on this one. Are you gonna rewrite Do I really have a system? Because I enjoy that one and how creative your main character was with fighting. I also enjoyed where the story was going same with this book.
From what I've read, the story is captivating and it stays true to its nature. The MC feels like a true antihero/villian character and he does exactly what he needs to do to survive and grow stronger, also the side characters feel real and well thought out. Fight scenes are great, but that's expected from Legioneer so I have to give it to him. I loved SSS, but I might like this one even more. Great job, Legioneer!
