There's something really interesting happening with the idea of identity and performance in this passage. Zhao Yunsheng is a young widow with a child—someone the factory workers clearly looked down on or took advantage of. But the moment she claims the title of 'military spouse,' everything changes. Liu Ping who was shouting accusations five seconds ago is suddenly bowing and apologizing. The police officer goes from skeptical to eagerly offering justice. The entire power dynamic shifts on a dime. And Pei Hechuan, the actual commander, plays along without denying it. Is this about the corruption of a system where a title matters more than truth? Or is it about how Zhao Yunsheng, a woman with no real power in this society, has to use the only weapon available to her—the association with a powerful man—to survive? The fact that she's unmarried and pregnant but doesn't deny the marriage claim adds another layer. She's performing a role because the performance keeps her safe. Meanwhile, Xu Mingjuan plays the role of the gentle, selfless aunt while subtly positioning herself. Everyone in this story is performing, and the question is—who's performing the best?
What do these people stand to lose? Let me count. Wen Yan: her fiancé (arranged, possibly loveless), her career (she just reunited with the man she wronged at her workplace), her self-image (she thought she was the victim but maybe she was the villain). Xie Cheng: his pride, his carefully constructed distance from a woman who treated him like a project, the truth about why he never corrected her assumption about his family. Qi Siye: his future wife, his sister's emotional stability, his own face with that bruise from protecting someone else. Jiang Wantang: access to someone who clearly doesn't want her. The stakes aren't life-or-death, but they're personal and they're escalating fast. The most dangerous conflict here isn't external—it's the unspoken history between Wen Yan and Xie Cheng. Every polite exchange at that dinner table is a minefield. When he toasts her and she toasts back with equal bitterness, they're both saying 'I see you' without saying it. That's where the real tension lives. And the suspense? Insane. Why did he hide his identity? Why did she leave with money instead of love? What happened in those three years? The author is playing 4D chess and I'm already checkmated.
The pacing in this section is masterful, and I want to break down why it works so well. The chapter opens with a quick hook—the ghost marriage ritual explanation, the red envelope, the stakes established immediately. Then we cut to domestic comedy with Qianjin and the dried fish negotiation. This contrast is intentional and brilliant. It lets the reader breathe before the real tension begins. When Qin Su arrives at the Gao villa, the atmosphere shifts. The author slows things down slightly, letting us absorb the details—Gao Wu's thin appearance, the hospital gown, the disappointment in his eyes when he sees her alone. Then the ghost appears, and suddenly we're in full supernatural thriller mode. The confrontation in the living room moves quickly, almost breathlessly, with rapid dialogue exchanges that keep the tension high. But then—bam—they enter the room, the door closes, and the pacing shifts again. This is where the author could have dragged things out with a long exorcism scene, but instead she compresses the entire resolution into a few paragraphs. The ghost's desperate bargaining, Qin Su's reveal of her true methods, Qianjin appearing as a threat—everything happens in quick succession. And then the aftermath? Even that moves at a brisk pace. The payment negotiation, Xin Ying's excitement, the bracelet conversation, the next morning routine. Nothing lingers too long. What I appreciated most was how the author used scene transitions to control the emotional rhythm. After the intense ghost confrontation, we get the comedic payment dispute. After that, the warm friendship moment with Xin Ying. Then a complete time skip to the next morning with cultivation and grocery shopping. The President Niu advertisement appearing on the news felt like a perfect setup for the next arc—brief, intriguing, and leaving us wanting more. The chapter ends on a light note with Qin Su shopping, which provides a satisfying denouement after the supernatural drama. But that final line about her appearance—'pure, delicate, and seemingly fragile'—hinted that there's more to her than meets the eye, which is a great note to end on. The author clearly understands that good pacing isn't just about speed; it's about variety and emotional rhythm.
Hey what can I rate more than once??I have devilish thoughts.?
Hello, it's Author-sama here. I decided to rate my book because why not? A lot of writers are doing that, so here it is.The Next General is about politics, power, military, war, etc. Unfortunately, it's not BL, but who knows if I will end up adding one or two elements to it? It is clearly a historical drama with no rebirth or transmigration. It is about fictional history which I want to make realistic so no super elevated powers, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing this review. I love you all and please do leave a review and comments if you like how the story is progressing and again I love you.
After reading the first chapter i got drawn into the story this really is a hidden gem
Is this a one man army? Or does he got subordinated and companions?
