Let me just say this: the pacing in these first three chapters is absolutely ruthless and I respect it. We go from a galaxy-wide emergency alarm about Planet 1029 facing destruction in ten and a half hours, to Yan Yang being blackmailed with her bonus, to her arriving at a prison outside a fringe universe planet, to beating up a gang of thugs—all within what feels like twenty pages. No filler. No 'meanwhile back at the headquarters' detours. The author just throws you into the deep end and doesn't let up. And that cliffhanger ending? 'She knew it was Feng Sixi.' Right after she's been cleaning her fingers because she hated touching dirty things? Perfect. The chapter structure itself is interesting too—starting with the high-stakes cosmic alarm, dropping us into Yan Yang's POV, then shifting to the prison scene where the real personal stakes begin. The transition from 'I need to save this planet' to 'I need to teach this guy a lesson' happens so smoothly you barely notice the tonal shift. But here's what's bothering me slightly—the first chapter establishes the SSS-Rank mission as this enormous, universe-shaking crisis, and then suddenly we're dealing with a local thug outside a prison. Is Wang Dahu really the main threat, or is he just the appetizer? I'm not complaining about the pacing, but I do want to know when the actual planet-level stakes come back into focus. Because right now it feels like we're building toward something bigger, and that's keeping me hooked.
I need to talk about the ending of this chapter because it wrecked me in the best way. We spend the whole chapter dealing with family drama, money, engagements, reputation — all the big stuff — and then the author just... drops this: at home, Yunwei makes do with plain porridge and pickled vegetables every day. At work, as a temporary worker, she can't even eat the same meals as regular employees. She saves wherever she can. Eggs are a luxury she only allows herself once in a long while. And then her mom says she'll boil her an egg, and 'her mouth felt so bland it could almost taste nothingness—a simple boiled egg was more satisfying than an extravagant, illusory Manchu-Han Imperial Feast.' I'm not crying, you're crying. This is the emotional core of the entire novel compressed into one sentence. All the family politics, the money, the engagement drama — it all falls away and what's left is a young woman who hasn't had a proper meal in who knows how long, and her mother's simple act of boiling an egg feels like the most profound expression of love in the book. The romantic tension with Du Zhenkai? Forget it. The real love story here is between a mother who works herself to the bone and a daughter who smiles through the hardship so her mom doesn't worry. That's what's going to stick with me.
