That's not blind obedience—that's a father who has been underestimated his whole life and finally has someone in his corner who sees his potential. Then there's Wu Zhuxiang, the mother, who 'hasn't doted on Yu Banxia in vain' according to her own words. She's emotionally intelligent enough to cry happy tears rather than guilt-trip anyone. And Yu Mangui and Wu Zhuxiang's marriage? The scene where he whispers to her about helping her sleep and then kisses her mouth? That's not just filler romance—that's a established, secure partnership where both people are genuinely happy. Meanwhile, the eldest brother's family (Yu Banta and his wife) were told to keep quiet about the soap business by Madam Wu, showing that even the 'villain-adjacent' relatives have been managed with clear boundaries. The author isn't writing a toxic family drama. Yu Banxia has agency, her family respects her, and everyone gets to grow. That's rare.
The description of the main kitchen gave me actual chills. Like, this isn't some generic palace backdrop—it's a living, breathing organism. Over a dozen assistants just for washing and cutting. The ingredients still have soil and dew on them, the meat still has that hint of blood. You can SMELL it through the prose. And then there's the Bamboo Garden, which is basically the opposite energy—silent, empty, no servants moving around, like a house where everyone died except the one person in the wheelchair. The contrast between these two spaces tells you everything about Fu Yuanzheng's world. The kitchen is warmth and noise and life; his private quarters are a tomb with a rocking chair. I also loved the detail about the plowshare grass—Viola philippica, the scientific name dropped right into a palace setting like Yao Chengcheng can't help but be herself even in a place that could execute her for breathing wrong. She's not looking at rare orchids or precious flowers; she's crouched down noticing a wildflower growing in a crack. That's her character in one image. And the half-mask on the prince, the loose hair, the rocking chair—he looks like a painting of someone who stopped being alive a long time ago. The author doesn't need to say 'he was depressed' because the setting does it for him.

This novel is a gem, but the beginning didn't quite grab me. However, the more I read, the more I became invested in the story. I definitely want to say to the author: don't give up on your work! It's clear that you have a lot of talent and potential, and I'm excited to see where this story goes.

This is honestly one of the very few books that would make me anticipate every single update because I usually get tired of the storyline in many books :'). But fr, 12/10 for this book!!! Very much recommended.
