'Just bring a few dishes at random; you decide.' I love this line because it's so Shen Zhengze. He's a lord who's used to having choices made for him, but here he is, deliberately giving control to someone else. It's a small gesture but it reveals everything about his character—confidence, patience, and maybe a hint of curiosity about this mysterious woman who runs a restaurant. But the real dialogue masterpiece is Han You's internal monologue, which the author lets slip out through his actions more than his words. Watch this sequence: 'I hope that Shen Zhengze wouldn't like it and would wave his hand to reward it to him. He absolutely wouldn't be polite!! Awoo awoo awoo.' The 'Awoo awoo awoo' is not a mistake. It's deliberate. The author is giving us Han You's voice—this is how a hungry, simple-minded man thinks when he's imagining getting free food. It's childish, it's desperate, it's hilarious. And it contrasts perfectly with Shen Zhengze's calm 'It's acceptable.' The dialogue between the Cheng couple is also great because it feels like a real married relationship. Old Master Cheng tries to sneak his buns over to her side, and she 'acted as if she hadn't seen a thing.' That's not dialogue, that's subtext, and it's perfect. They've been together so long they communicate in movements. And then when he starts chatting with the girl at the next table about how delicious the buns are, Madam Cheng's reaction—'Madam Cheng: …'—says everything. She's proud of her husband's enthusiasm but also mildly embarrassed by it. Real marriage energy. Jiang Mo's dialogue is more restrained, which makes sense given her situation. But when she does speak, it's precise: 'I have read a few books,' said modestly. She's performing modesty, and the reader knows it. The gap between what she says and what she means is where the tension lives.
Okay so let's talk about Yan Zihao because this guy is quietly the most interesting character in this whole setup and I need to unpack why. On the surface he's this stoic, hardworking ancient Chinese husband type. But the details keep catching me off guard. Remember when Lu Qingran falls asleep in the chair after their town trip? He doesn't just leave her there. He carries her to bed. Like, literally picks her up and puts her on the mattress. And then he sits back down at the desk to read his book while she sleeps. That's such a specific kind of tenderness—it's not dramatic or overt, it's just... there. Practical care. Then there's the literacy thing. When Lu Qingran asks to learn to read, Yan Zihao immediately agrees. But here's what got me: the narration tells us he actually noticed from her expression that she probably already knows how to read. He pretends not to notice. He plays along. That's either incredibly perceptive or incredibly gentle, maybe both. He's giving her an out, letting her save face while still helping her. That's a man who pays attention. And the candied hawthorn scene! She offers him a bite, he sees the bite marks and eats from the same spot. They both think it's too sour but they share it anyway. Little moments like this where they're just... figuring each other out. Building something. But what really struck me is how the power dynamic shifts. She's the one who proposes going up the mountain. She's the one who finds the ginseng. She's the one driving their economic escape. Meanwhile Yan Zihao is just... following along, trusting her. That's a relationship where both people are contributing in different ways, and honestly that's way more interesting than the typical ancient romance setup where the guy does everything. I'm genuinely invested in how this partnership evolves. They're not just husband and wife by arrangement anymore. They're becoming a team. And I have so many questions about what happens next when the full extent of her secrets comes to light.
Overall a pretty good story considering the common premise and the common copy and paste of this kind of genre. However the author actually does this differently, although the mc has a major advantage of “being two people” it is a reasonably a fair cheat while the mc still has to fit into the framework that everyone else does while trying to make the most of his advantages along with planning to the best of his ability but not out of what can be consider a normal human. As for characters, the characters although not perfect, that is what makes them good because they have that small spark of humanity that will allow future development. Now let’s get into world background hasn’t been developed enough for me to give the green light or red light about it, which is good because if a story reveals to much background at once for no good reason the readers will feel bored and unable to get that sense of discovery along with the mc. Now onto advice for the author: 1. Don’t fall into the trap of my mc is perfect or he can’t make mistakes because that will annoy readers yes some readers may complain or leave but that won’t be the majority, 2. Don’t be afraid to punish your mc for his mistakes, mistakes generally come with consequences, whether it is tripping because you weren’t paying attention to where you are walking, or generals losing a part of their army because they mispredicted the enemies moves, 3. Have a hint of randomness in your story something not even you can predict, some of the best stories have hints of randomness to them, you could even get a wheel with a bunch of random events that you want to happen but aren’t sure how to implement them then spin it every 10 or 20 chapters, and if the event can be fit in the story with the mc’s current situation put it in then your mc has a random event that he will have to adapt to, but don’t try to force it because the. You will just be reducing the quality of the story rather than improve it. (Also I left everything vague so there will be pretty much no spoilers) anyway hope you all enjoy this story as much as I am and hope you all have a great day imma go back to reading
More chapterss...A good translation for a Chinese novel I would say Keep it up author..
The novel is very unique, but everything looks too packed together. It's hard to follow anything.Try introducing new things and people a step at a time.
very interesting story ??? once I begin to read, I just couldn't stop
A truly captivating and suspenseful story
It's an attractive story.romantic, trilling, and exciting!
hi I'm the author of this novel. this is my debut work so I know that my writing skills suck. i hope you like it
this novel quite interesting, but the conflict is a bit forced
I didn’t know what to expect, but the apocalyptic scenario seems as though it will be well-explored, which I appreciate.
Blocked chapters basically start at chapter 10?☠️
