GhostWorker
I need to talk about He Xiao because this guy is EVERYTHING and I am not okay. On the surface, he's the classic cold bodyguard archetype — sharp words, averted gaze, clearly annoyed. But the text drops these tiny details that completely undermine that exterior. His ears turning bright red while he's trying to maintain a stone face? That's not indifference, that's flustered restraint. The fact that he came to her room despite every intention of ignoring the call? He's already compromised before he even walked through the door. And the most telling moment — when he lifts her into his arms and deliberately avoids looking at her body? That's not the behavior of someone who's disgusted. That's someone who's actively fighting his own reactions. He Xiao is the type who shows care through action, not words. He agrees to carry her, to help her bathe, all while verbally protesting the entire time. That's his love language — grudging service. The original Sheng He drugged him, which makes this whole dynamic even more complicated. The new Sheng He is navigating a relationship that started under the worst possible circumstances, and she's smart enough to read him correctly: tough outside, soft inside. She knows exactly how to get under his defenses. But I'm genuinely curious whether he'll ever figure out that the woman he's been reluctantly caring for isn't the same arrogant heiress from before. That reveal is going to be explosive.
Let's talk about Chapter 1's opening because WOW. The author did NOT come to play. "The rusty prison door was pushed open, letting out a piercing screech. Fresh air rushed into the cramped cell, dispersing the stench of blood and dampness." I could literally SMELL that dungeon. Like, I'm not exaggerating—I physically recoiled. And then the description of her wrists. Severed at the wrists, crudely wrapped in straw, festering, MAGGOTS gnawing at rotting flesh. I had to pause and breathe for a second. This is not a gentle story. But what made it truly cinematic wasn't just the gore—it was the contrast. Shen Sichen standing there in those bright yellow boots embroidered with gold thread, looking down at her like she's nothing, while she spits at his shoes. The visual of that box on the tray. Small. Square. Blood seeping from the bottom, dripping silently onto the ground, "blooming into flowers of gore." He even offers to let her look at her father's remains. Like it's a gift. The casualness of it all is what makes it so horrifying. And then—Chapter 2. Red lanterns. Colorful decorations. Festive silk drapes. Both of them in bright red wedding attire. The contrast between the blood-soaked dungeon and this vibrant, almost suffocatingly festive wedding chamber is chef's kiss. The author uses color like a weapon. Red everywhere in Chapter 2—wedding clothes, candles, silk—everything screaming celebration, while underneath it all there's this undercurrent of violence and tension. When he tears her wedding dress open, the "snow-white, porcelain-like skin" against the red fabric—it's visually striking in a way that feels almost painted. The worldbuilding details are also layered in naturally. The Hall of Law Enforcement, established specifically to satisfy the Emperor's brother's "bloodthirsty inclinations"—a place of "perpetual darkness, rivers of blood, and endless wails of agony." That one paragraph tells you SO much about this dynasty's political structure and the power dynamics at play. The Lin Dynasty, the Emperor doting on his younger brother, the General's Manor's political influence—all woven into narrative without feeling like an info dump. The world feels lived-in and dangerous, and I'm here for it.
This is Void's novel so I had to leave a review here. It is funny, the MC is cunning as the title says him being a scammer and all. It is a good read and Void knows how to make things interesting. Looking forward to more chapters. :)
Hello great author, I'm a huge fan of your work! Your book left a lasting impression on me, and I believe it has the potential to reach even more readers. I'd be honored to share some thoughts on how to enhance its impact and visibility. Would you be open to hearing my thoughts?
overall a very good story with great plot
Honestly it was good but you ruined it later on, you know i didn't like how do the terrorists got in the mall or whatever and even if the mc gained a skill you can use it in mid or late story, you're rushing mc to use the skill and it makes the story simple and predictable.
The book is amazing with its perks but I can't really relate with the characterAsides from that, the book is a great read
Wow, this book is really amazing, I love Ren's adventure, I'm waiting for more of this book, I can't believe that this is the author's first book
