The dialogue here is genuinely excellent because every character sounds completely distinct. Madam Shen's voice is pure venom—'A woman who won't listen must be controlled. If nothing else works, beat her—then she'll learn obedience.' That's not just a line; that's a worldview. You immediately understand this is a woman who believes power is maintained through fear. Shen Que? He's barely spoken but when he does, it's defensive and hollow—'Mother, enough.' He's caught between his mother's cruelty and his wife's dignity, and he chooses neither. Then there's Chun Xing, whose voice is all fire and directness: 'Heartless, ungrateful, despicable, shameless—beast in human guise!' She doesn't mince words. And Nanny Zhang? Her dialogue is full of suppressed emotion—'Four years wasted here in vain...'—the pauses and the tears between the words. But Su Ran's voice is the most interesting because it's the most controlled. 'I am not angry—why should you be?' 'Life is short. Don't trap yourself in emotions.' She speaks in complete thoughts, in measured sentences, in wisdom that comes from pain. The contrast between her calm dialogue and Chun Xing's explosive outbursts creates this really dynamic rhythm. And the narrative voice itself—there's this wonderful omniscient narrator who occasionally drops in with commentary: 'He weighed the pros and cons; she cut her losses in time. Fortunately, it was not too late—she was still young.' That's the author winking at us, saying 'I see what's happening here, and so should you.' The dialogue isn't just functional; it's character revelation, and it's done with real skill.
This book is obsessed with the act of taking root, and I mean that both literally and metaphorically. Let me walk through the symbols because they keep showing up and they're not accidental. The vegetable patch is the first major symbol. Chen Shuang plants seeds given by Sister Wang, but she also secretly adds water spinach and sweet potato vines from her space. She's literally and figuratively cultivating something in foreign soil. The seeds sprout, the chickens lay eggs, the yard transforms from empty to alive. This is her building a home in a place that was never meant to be hers. Then there's the jackfruit tree. It's mentioned early on with the clothesline strung beneath it, providing shade and ventilation. By the end, the evening wind rustles its leaves and carries the whisper of the sea. This tree is the silent witness to their entire transformation—from strangers to a family. It's rooted in place the way they're learning to be rooted too. The chicken coop is another symbol I can't ignore. He Yanzhi delivers on his promise—a sturdy, two-tiered coop treated with tung oil. Six Lu Hua chicks arrive fluffy and chirping. Zhou Ma treasures them. This is domesticity made physical. In a military compound where life is structured and controlled, the chickens represent something wild and alive that they've brought under their care. But the most powerful symbol might be the preserved meat. Chen Shuang says it came from Shanghai and she's been saving it. She decides to celebrate with it. It's a taste of her past, her identity, her history—shared at their table with the man she's building a life with. When He Yanzhi takes several extra servings, he's not just enjoying good food. He's accepting a piece of her world. The family letter, the bankbooks, the clothes from home—these are all symbols of the He family's acceptance, however quiet. His mother's delicate script explaining how to care for the clothes. That detail alone tells you everything about the kind of woman raised this man. And the warm house banquet at the end? That's the culmination of every symbol. A home that was built from nothing, now hosting a feast. The courtyard filled with aroma and people. This is what taking root looks like.
This is not a genre I usually read, but this novel is so intriguing. Kudos to the author for creating it. I will keep an eye on it in the future
I love it simple , it's tragic though but curious to know more , please update more
A fun an enjoyable read. A definite must have in your library if you want to chill and relax after a long day at work or in school. Thanks for the chaptets and do keep writing!!
Tags are misleading. While it is not a “harem” it is the closest you can get without being one. MC simps for the girls he meets in the first 5 chapters. Also his “easy mode” is not actually easy mode. All the characters are capped at 10 on all stats. Which means anyone who reaches level 30 are already on even playing field. Which 8 people already are from his party within second day.In short this is a story from 10 different view points and takes 100 chapters just to progress to the third day. MC is not OP even though the author tries his hardest to make it seem like it.
I love how the story started. The power concept is unique!
