Okay, let's talk about stakes because this chapter is a masterclass in escalating tension without a single action scene. On the surface, the conflict is simple: a poor farmer's son needs surgery the hospital can't afford to perform. But the author immediately layers this with at least four different levels of conflict, and they all feed into each other. First, there's the patient-level conflict. Liang Youtian is in his thirties. He has a suspected stomach tumor. If they don't treat him, he has ten months to live. That's not abstract — that's a man who will go home and wait to die. Director Lin has personally visited him. This isn't a statistics problem; it's a person. Second, there's the institutional conflict. Director Chen lays it out plainly: the last two emergency patients' expenses are still outstanding. The hospital is already strained. Performing a gastrectomy — a surgery they've never done before — at a county hospital that lacks the equipment and expertise is a enormous risk. If something goes wrong, the hospital bears the responsibility. If they can't collect the fees, they absorb the loss. Third, there's the personal conflict for Fang Yuan. She's arrived at this hospital full of idealism, and within hours she's witnessing the collision between that idealism and reality. Director Chen's admonishment about ambition, Director Lin's moral certainty, Doctor Jiang's clinical pragmatism — she's standing in the middle of all of it, and she hasn't even started working yet. What will she believe? Who will she become? Fourth, and this is the most subtle layer, there's the conflict between different definitions of what a hospital is. Is it a business that needs to balance its books? Is it a charitable institution that must treat everyone regardless of ability to pay? Is it a government entity that must follow procedure? Director Lin believes it's the second. Director Chen knows it's the third. Doctor Jiang just wants to perform the surgery. And Fang Yuan... she's still figuring it out. The stakes are raised even higher when Director Lin reveals that if the tumor is malignant, the surgery must be performed at the provincial hospital — meaning Liang Youtian would need to travel, endure another level of bureaucracy, and face costs the county hospital can't control. The system is designed to push poor people out, and Director Lin is explicitly choosing to resist that design. What makes this conflict so gripping is that everyone is right. Director Chen isn't a villain — he's protecting the hospital's survival. Director Lin isn't a saint — he's making a calculated moral gamble. Doctor Jiang isn't indifferent — he's focused on what he can control. And Fang Yuan isn't naive — she's just beginning to understand that medicine isn't just about saving lives, it's about navigating the impossible choices between saving some lives and preserving the ability to save others. The chapter ends without resolving any of this. A temporary meeting will be held. The Party Secretary and department heads must agree. The family must obtain certification. The surgery may happen, may not. And Fang Yuan is standing there, holding her ration coupons, watching the steam rise from the cafeteria's braised pork meatballs, completely unaware that her first day has already changed everything.
The story is beautifully written, it is very immersive and the world building is very interesting. It is a little slow paced at the beginning, but it was worth the wait to Sollivan awakening. Highly recommended, and kudos to the Author ?
Thank you for putting this on Webnovel! It feels so much better to read this on webnovel over wuxiaworld.
one of the best apocalypse style stories out there on this platform ?, thanks for this masterpiece. Keep up the great work, and I can't wait to see how her powers develop. Water abilities are not often used and are overlooked despite how overpowered they can be, imagine making a water blade but moving rapidly like a waterjet cutter that people use to cut metal, slicing through enemies like butter, or like Jinbe and pressurize the water in your attacks increasing their lethality, forming and launching a tsunami, flooding an area and creating a whirlpool, making water summons like a hydra or anything for the matter the sky is the limit
Yo! I just created my account, and this was the first story I read! And I have no regrets! I'm not sure if I’m doing this review right since this is one of the first stories I’ve read on this app, but out of everything I’ve checked out, this is the one I keep coming back to for updates. It’s not exactly riding the trendy tags, but if you're looking for a fresh trope or theme, I totally recommend this one! Ryo gives me Okarun vibes, but he still has his own unique personality that I really like. More updates, please, Author-san!
I’ve been hooked on Shadow of Terror since the first few chapters! The story follows Collin, a girl who just wants a normal life but keeps getting dragged into conflicts because of her reputation. She’s a strong, decisive character, and I love how the people around her react—some fear her, while others, like Felix, are intrigued. The slow-burn romance and tension between her and Felix add just the right amount of spice to the story. The writing is engaging, and the dialogue feels natural. Some scenes could benefit from smoother transitions, and there are moments where the pacing feels a little rushed, but overall, it’s a solid read. The plot is well-structured, and I like how things aren’t spoon-fed to the reader. Collin’s journey is compelling, and the mystery behind her past keeps me interested. Some fights and emotional moments could use more buildup, but the tension is definitely there! Collin is a well-written protagonist, and Felix is one of my favorite characters—he’s observant, cunning, and has layers to him. Jax is another standout; his personality adds energy to the group. I wish some character introductions were smoother, but they all feel distinct and memorable. This story is a great mix of action, drama, and slow-burn romance. If you like strong female leads, school settings with a twist, and characters with depth, you’ll enjoy Shadow of Terror. Can’t wait to see what happens next!
Hey dude, i got a novel I'm writing right now. How about we both check each other's ones out. dwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
This is one of the best regression plot I've seenkeep it up author
Chapters read: 42I thought mixing mage concepts with cultivation was interesting, but things got a bit confusing to me. I did feel the antagonization of the MC was a bit forced with some of the characters. There didn't seem to be any background information as to what MC possibly did to them to merit that hatred lol aside from Raiden, the hatred of others seems a little out of place. That's just what I think, but I know someone can hate you for no reason too. So perhaps it's reasonable?? I thought the story was okay, neither great nor terrible.
This is my first book on romance, but I'm definitely doing my best to improve regularly, especially in grammar. Hope you enjoy reading it. ?
system in three kingdom looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool
