I need to talk about Zhou Muchen for a second because this man is quietly becoming the best romantic interest in this entire novel and I am NOT okay with it. Here's the thing — he makes a joke about her and bribery, she gets visibly upset, and instead of doubling down or brushing it off, he ACTUALLY APOLOGIZES. Like, a sincere, no-strings-attached apology. Not 'I'm sorry you felt that way' but 'I was wrong, I didn't mean to upset you.' That is RARE in fiction. Most male leads would have made her apologize for overreacting. Zhou Muchen just... owns it. And then the follow-up? He keeps checking in. 'Not angry anymore?' 'So you didn't see Lu's doctor's second sister just now?' He's fishing for information but also just... present. He cares about her emotional state and he's not hiding it. The fact that she completely forgets she was mad because she was having fun with the card game? That's not manipulation, that's just genuine good chemistry. They're not exes who can't let go — they're two people who clearly understand each other better than anyone else in the room. Meanwhile the Lu family dynamic is just... tragic. Lu Changsheng showing up with that sense of entitlement, like Shen Zhiyi still owes him loyalty after everything they put her through. And the chefs defending her like she's one of them? That's earned respect, not blood obligation. The contrast is everything.
I'm not even going to pretend I'm not shipping the entire Rangcheng squad at this point. The emotional threads in this chapter are so rich and layered. Let's start with the most obvious one — Zhuge Liang watching his world quietly rearrange itself around Jia Xu. His brother clinging to Jia Xu's sleeve like a cat, his wife declaring she'll follow Jia Xu anywhere as long as he teaches her that explosion thing, and Zhuge Liang just... withdraws into himself. Takes a deep breath. Steps up to command. There's so much unspoken emotion in that sequence. He's not angry, he's not jealous, he's just processing the fact that the person he brought to Rangcheng has become the gravitational center of everyone's loyalty. Then there's Zhang Xiu. The man literally cannot stop smiling when Jia Xu says 'our Rangcheng.' He chews on that word like it's the most precious thing he's ever heard. This is a warlord who's been through betrayal and loss and instability, and one casual possessive pronoun from Jia Xu makes his whole face light up. I'm not okay. The civilian scenes hit different too. Jia Xu organized fire drills and anti-terrorism training for a medieval Chinese city and the people are out there happily making multiple trips carrying shields, no panic, no fear of death, just shared determination. Huang Yueying watches this and is completely speechless. She's seen cities burn from within, seen gates opened to enemies, seen people flee in terror. And here is this community that CHOOSES to stand together. 'Perhaps this was what it truly meant to strategize for the people?' Huang Yueying thinks this and honestly? She's right. Jia Xu may not realize it, but the way he cares for these people — teaching them numbers, preparing escape routes, making sure the elderly and weak have roles too — that's the emotional core of everything he's doing.
The way the author builds this world is just *chef's kiss*. Let me start with the opening image - sunlight filtering through wooden lattice glass, falling across a bamboo mat and palm-leaf fan. In one sentence you're transported. You can feel the warmth returning to those icy blood-red dream memories. And then the corridor! Two-story apartment buildings, every family stacking honeycomb coal briquettes and keeping small coal stoves in the hall. The aromas of various dishes drifting from who-knows-which households. This isn't just background, this is a whole ecosystem. The voices of neighborhood aunties and grannies discussing lotus stems and high school applications - it's so specific and vivid. I could literally hear them. The factory itself is described as a self-contained world: dormitories, cafeterias, nursery, elementary school, middle school, hospital, grain store, even a lighted sports court. It covers a worker from birth to death. During the three years of famine, workers merely went a little hungry. No one starved. That detail alone tells you everything about the power and isolation of this industrial community. And the factory radio broadcasting about Comrade Li Dazhao's quote about the character for worker - the top stroke is heaven, the bottom is earth, the vertical is the worker standing between them. I keep coming back to that image. It's both propaganda and genuine poetry. The world feels so alive I want to step inside it.
I keep coming back to the very last image in this passage. Ye Pengzhou has been watching Fengxue the entire time—studying her, probing her, and then she turns and looks right back at him. She's standing there in a green robe soaked in blood, this fierce chilling intensity around her, brows severe, impossible to approach. And then she smiles faintly. "like a spring breeze passing through, the ice in her eyes melted entirely" I literally gasped. That's it. That's the moment. Everything—the brutal skinning, the deliverance chant, the way she declined the villagers' money but accepted their gifts of food and cloth, the fact that she's poor despite her merchant family sending her money every year because she's too stubborn and competitive to take anything but the hardest commissions—it all funnels into that one smile. She's not a saint. She skins people with stones. She burns corpses without flinching. But she also cradles a bloody hide and chants for the trapped souls inside it. She gives the demon lords a proper send-off for the heretical cultivator. She walks through a crowd of grieving parents in her blood-soaked robes and they're not scared of her—they bring her gifts. And Ye Pengzhou—future infamous demon lord, kid who cut out children's tongues because they were too noisy—he's just sitting there, folding his Ghost-Wailing Blade into the shape of a fan, smiling at her like she's the most interesting thing he's ever seen. The CP energy here is not subtle but it's also not forced. It's earned through this incredible contrast of who these people are and who they're becoming.
"Then what do you care about?" "Just being alive, and having enough to eat—that's all." I need a minute. Ye Wuyou says this line completely deadpan, like it's the most normal thing in the world, and I just—she's been through literal death and rebirth and her biggest concern is whether she gets fed? That's not casual, that's trauma talking. That's someone who has been so starved and abused that her baseline for 'a good life' is terrifyingly low. And Ling Yu hears this and instead of being moved or horrified, he LAUGHS and says 'stay here, I'll feed you.' Is he joking? Is he serious? The text says his eyes were 'full of earnestness' and he wasn't joking 'this time.' But Ye Wuyou can't parse it. She's too busy being mad about the chicken leg to notice that this man is literally offering her safety. The scene where he pulls her into his arms and she struggles and says 'I don't want to be your wife' while also not actually leaving—that tension is everything. She's trapped, yes, but she's also starting to not hate him, and that's scarier for her than any enemy. Because if she starts caring, she has something to lose. And Ye Wuyou has spent her whole life making sure she had nothing to lose.
simply Amazing, the Novel is very unique
The characters are good. The intro gives a good start with a family scenario. The character of female lead is interesting but sleeping pills gives an insight of something mysterious that could come up. The male character looks quite good and safe. Let's see what more could come up.
I really liked this novel and would recommend others to read it. Eagerly waiting for upcoming chapters. Hope author keep up the good work and keep on updating regularly.
The book is interesting, Anne still has humanity in her, but with her learning about herself, it's truly fun. I also like her relationship with Adam
I love a high stakes situation and the suspense is built up so well! Waiting for more
