Lordous
Okay so I just finished this section and I am absolutely SHOOK. Let me just say this first: the reveal about Yao Jinfeng being alive is one of the best plot twists I've read in a while. Like, it recontextualizes EVERYTHING. All those times Shen Xinyan thought she was being oppressed as a poor widow, all the money she sent, all the schemes against her—it wasn't just petty family drama, it was a cover-up for treason. The way A-Man drops this information is chef's kiss. She doesn't just say "hey your husband is alive"—she lays out the whole timeline: the fake military glory, the desertion, the body swap, the return to Jingcheng. And the Yao family KNEW. Yao Qian knew. Yao Changcheng knew. Everyone except Madam Yao Li, who is apparently kept in the dark on purpose because she's too foolish to handle the truth. That detail about Madam Yao Li being deliberately kept ignorant is such a sharp character note. But here's what really got me—the motivation for why they couldn't just let Shen Xinyan die naturally. If she dies of illness, the Empress Dowager investigates. But if her reputation is ruined at the Chang Gongzhu's estate? The Empress Dowager steps back out of familial dignity. That is COLD. That is a scheme so vicious it made me physically angry. The Yao family isn't just greedy—they're calculating enough to weaponize imperial family dynamics against a young woman. And A-Man? She's been building an intelligence network from the BOTTOM UP. From a brothel to bringing down an entire family. "The Yao family's greatest mistake back then was sparing my life." I need to sit with that sentence for a while.
Okay so the plot in these chapters is actually running SO deep and I need to break it down because the author is playing 4D chess. Let's trace the sequence: Wen Shuyi gets caught in a work mistake → she takes the blame gracefully in front of everyone → Duan Zhuo calls her out as a "green tea" → she later tells An Li it was her fault too → she invites An Li for milk tea → An Li gets pearl milk tea instead of the mango pomelo sago she ordered → Wen Shuyi faints from an allergy after drinking what she THOUGHT was her milk tea. Here's the thing that got me—Wen Shuyi ORDERED the milk tea for An Li. She placed the order herself. She said "the same as before?" and then somehow the wrong drink ended up with An Li while Wen Shuyi got the mango pomelo sago. This isn't accidental. This is a setup. She knew An Li is allergic to mango (or at least, she suspected), swapped the drinks, and then "accidentally" drank the wrong one herself to make it look like an accident. The band member finding her collapsed is the perfect cover. Now it looks like a tragic misunderstanding rather than an attempted poisoning. And An Li? She's the one who would be suspected if anything happened to Wen Shuyi, because they were the ones who had the "mix-up." What I love about this plot is how the author layers it. First we see Wen Shuyi as the sweet, self-sacrificing fiancée. Then Duan Zhuo drops hints that she's not genuine. Then the milk tea incident happens and suddenly everything clicks into place. The reveal that she adjusted her hairstyle while "fainting" is the cherry on top—Duan Zhuo noticed, which means he's been watching her this whole time. The plot is tight. Every detail matters. And An Li is only just starting to connect the dots.
Let me just say this about Yan Li: he is the most confidently wrong person I have ever encountered in fiction and I have read a lot of fiction. The man walks in, veil on, acting all ethereal and transcendent, and immediately starts giving Shen Qingtang life advice like he's some kind of enlightenment guru. "You are no ordinary fish trapped in a pond." Bro, you just met this man. You played weichi for approximately four minutes. What gives you the right? But here's the thing—the dialogue between Yan Li and Shen Qingtang is genuinely excellent writing. Yan Li's voice is so distinct from everyone else. He speaks in these poetic, almost theatrical lines: "If all men in this world were bound by these decadent rules, trapped in deep chambers, how could they save countless comrades from suffering?" He sounds like he stepped out of a manifesto. And Shen Qingtang? His responses are razor-sharp but delivered with this calm, almost bored precision. The contrast between them is delicious. The funniest exchange has to be when Shen Qingtang essentially roasts Yan Li's entire organization: "I have heard of a place in this world called the Lingyin Workshop... Today I see that its founder is not only skilled in music but also adept at manipulating people's hearts." That's not even a direct quote from the text, that's Shen Qingtang's internal monologue narrating the situation with maximum sarcasm. And then he turns it around and asks Yan Li whether his mysterious patron actually knows what he's doing or is just being used. Yan Li literally has no response to that. He just stands up and says "It seems I overthought things" and leaves. He was played. He was played so hard. Also, the court scene dialogue between the Minister of Rites and the Grand Commandant is just two old men screaming at each other and I love it. "Your daughter is no saint either!" "How shameless!" It's so mundane and yet the Emperor is just sitting there eating agarwood and waiting for it to be over.
