The stakes in this story are incredibly high and they escalate fast. Su Jiuyue has already lived through a tragedy where she lost everything—her reputation, her mental health, her daughter, and her life. Now she's back with a second chance, and the conflict is immediate: Li Yanchuan and Bai Lili are actively trying to steal her money and manipulate her. But the stakes go beyond just money. It's about survival, about protecting her daughter from the same fate, about exposing the truth without getting herself institutionalized again. The scene where someone searches the drawers while Su Jiuyue pretends to sleep is pure tension—what if they find the empty boxes? What if they realize she's onto them? And then there's the larger conflict: Li Yanchuan is living under his brother's identity, which means he's committing fraud, possibly desertion, and he has a whole new family (Bai Lili and Taotao) depending on him. If his past catches up, everyone falls. Su Jiuyue knows this, and she's playing a dangerous game. The compensation money, the bank accounts, the gold bars—all of it is both literal and symbolic currency in her fight for justice.
I need to talk about Chu Jin because this man is absolutely unhinged and I love him for it. Let's look at his behavior in this scene. Luo Ran is clearly uncomfortable—her ears are flushed red, her eyelashes are trembling, she's trying to get up and leave. And what does he do? He holds her tighter. He accuses her of provoking him. He pins her under water and asks if she's determined to force him to take her. This is a man who operates on a completely different wavelength from everyone else in this story. But here's the thing that makes him compelling rather than just creepy: the author gives us glimpses of something else underneath all that dominance. When he brushes her flushed cheek with his fingertips, when the corners of his eyes are tinged red, when his Adam's apple bobs and he says his voice is reluctant—that's not just a domineering master playing with his servant. That's a man who is genuinely affected by her, who is struggling with something he can't quite control. And Luo Ran? She's terrified. Her voice shakes, her eyes are wet, she's trembling all over. But she doesn't completely break either. She tries to push him away. She calls him "Master" with this mix of fear and something else. She's caught between her position as a servant and whatever this magnetic pull is between them. The power dynamic here is SO thick you could cut it with a knife. He's the master, she's the servant. He's the one with martial arts training (callused palm, obviously), she's the one who was sold. But there's also this moment where she accidentally rubs against him in the water and he makes this suppressed groan—and suddenly the power dynamic shifts, even if just for a second. She has this unintentional power over him, and he knows it, and it clearly unsettles him. I'm also obsessed with the interruption moment. Most authors would have Chu Jin immediately pull away and compose himself. But he doesn't. He kisses her deeper first, like he needs to mark this moment before he has to leave. And then he tells her to wait in his room. That's not just sexual tension—that's a promise. Whatever happens next, it's going to happen in his room, and Luo Ran is going to be waiting. The relationship between these two is walking this razor-thin line between danger and desire, and I am SO ready to see where it goes.
Let me just start by saying Yuyi Yue's dialogue voice is one of the most distinctive things about this novel. She says things like 'My Master said it's normal for people who like each other to sleep together' with the same flat affect she uses to discuss herbal medicine. There's zero romantic intention behind her words, which makes them infinitely more devastating coming from Fang Xun'gui's perspective. The contrast between her voice and his internal monologue is where the humor lives. Take this exchange: 'Why is your face turning red again?' '…' 'I remember now! My Master said that when you sleep with someone you like, you wake up feeling shy. So, are you feeling shy?' 'Cough cough cough cough cough—' She's genuinely trying to help him sleep, brewing calming tea, being caring — and she has no idea she's also systematically dismantling his emotional composure. Her dialogue is simple, direct, almost childlike in its literalness. But it's also weirdly wise. When she says 'You never eat properly, and if you keep this up, it'll harm your health. You'll get sick when you're old,' that's the kind of scolding that comes from someone who actually cares, even if she frames it as practical advice. Fang Xun'gui's dialogue, by contrast, is full of hesitation, self-interruption, and the kind of formal politeness ('Thank you for your trouble') that reveals how guarded he is. The narrative voice itself is interesting too — it's close third person, mostly anchored to Fang Xun'gui's perspective, but it occasionally dips into Yuyi Yue's interiority. The author's voice has this wry, observant quality that lets the comedy emerge from situation rather than from witty banter. Which is why it works so well.
