The plot structure here is interesting because it operates on two levels simultaneously. On the surface, it is a standard post-apocalyptic survival story — scavenging for fuel, avoiding zombies, moving from location to location. But underneath that is a slow-burn romantic arc that the characters themselves are only beginning to recognize. The gas station trip in Chapter 10 is a perfect example. Zhao Yan leaves early with Wang Ni and Wu You. Le Huan stays behind, not worried at all, certain he would not abandon her. And she is right — he goes to retrieve fuel, comes back with milk candies for her, and gets injured protecting himself from a zombie because he was distracted thinking about her. The injury scene is narratively significant. He does not mention it initially. She notices. She touches his arm and asks if it hurts — the first time she has shown direct concern. He says he is fine and walks away stiffly. Then he returns and gives her candies he found. Small gestures that build a pattern. Chapter 11 shifts the plot internally rather than externally. Nothing major happens — they eat, they pack, they prepare to leave. But the emotional plot advances dramatically when Xiong Gang and Chen Youyu essentially coach Zhao Yan through recognizing that Le Huan likes him. The scene where Zhao Yan looks up at the sky and processes this information feels like a turning point. The ending of this batch — Le Huan falling asleep on his shoulder during the car ride, him staying perfectly still, leaning down to breathe in her hair — is the plot's quiet climax. No words. No confession. Just two people who are too stubborn and too scared to admit what is happening to them.
I have to talk about the pacing in these chapters because the author really knows how to control the rhythm. Let me trace it: We open with this almost domestic scene—Song Zhiyao walking with the children, Madam Lu watching from behind with her worries. It's gentle, almost idyllic. Then we cut to Lu Yanzhi under the lamplight, and the temperature drops ten degrees. "Waiting for you." Three words that carry so much weight. The tension builds in the study—calm, measured, like two people circling each other over tea. And just when you think it's going to stay quiet... Lu Jinyu bursts in. The transition is seamless. One moment it's a quiet conversation about Jianwei's condition, the next it's chaos. And then—after the tea incident and Lu Jinyu's humiliation—the pacing slows again. Song Zhiyao writes a letter to her mother. This quiet moment of reflection is crucial. It gives the reader (and Song Zhiyao) a breath before the next scene. Then we're in the Zhimou Courtyard with the children, and the pace becomes tender, almost hesitant. Song Zhiyao doesn't know how to hold Weiwei. The chapter ends on this note of uncertainty and hope. The author never lets the story sit in one emotional register for too long, which is why I couldn't put it down. Each scene shift feels earned, not rushed.
Hmmm, this author writes interesting novels, good grammar and the smut is excellent. But a flaw for me in his books is his mc rambles a lot, they act like schizos. It’s like they can’t focus on something, it can be really frustrating. And also terrible buildup, author wastes way too much time on certain things, really annoying. Overall I’d recommend the book for the smut and the world.
After reading the first chapter i got drawn into the story this really is a hidden gem
The two chapters have a lot of movie references; maybe the author could tone it down a notch. Otherwise, it's a good read.Give it a try
