kkkkkkkkkkk
Okay so I need to talk about Meng Yancheng because this guy is fascinating and I am not over it. Here's a man who just watched a woman get publicly humiliated at a banquet, and instead of doing the typical romance-novel thing of sweeping her up and declaring war, he just... crouches down and picks up her stuff. One by one. Puts it back in her bag. Hands it to her. That's it. No grand speech, no dramatic rescue, just quiet competence and this devastating line: "On behalf of my sister, I apologize." But then the twist—Fan Shengmei doesn't take his card. She looks him dead in the eye and says "You're not the one who owes me an apology." And I SCREAMED internally because that is a woman who still has her spine intact despite being absolutely destroyed that night. And then the next chapter shows us the OTHER side of Meng Yancheng—sitting in his Lincoln with Xu Qin, and suddenly he's not the composed billionaire anymore. He's frustrated, hurt, almost confessing something devastating: "Do you know what I wish? That you weren't my family either—because then I could have—" And then he cuts himself off. WHAT COULD HE HAVE DONE? The subtext is SO LOUD. But here's what really got me—he sees Fan Shengmei standing in the rain for HOURS holding that Hermès box, and his first instinct is to just... drive away. Not because he's cruel, but because he's trying to be rational. He's telling himself she was at that banquet for a reason, she's not worth the complication. And yet his assistant describes her as "very beautiful" and Meng Yancheng's hand STILLS. He spots her INSTANTLY through the rain. Even while trying to walk away. This man is fighting himself every single chapter and I am here for it.
The fireworks scene. Let me just—fireworks and drones forming hands holding a heart, and Wei Zhenye watches it from a charity gala while playing truth or dare with the man he's been in love with for eight years, and then he withdraws the message. Why does that image keep haunting me? The contrast between that public spectacle of romance and his private, invisible longing is just... it's cinematic. The author writes scenes like camera shots. And then the reunion. A broken streetlight. One working pole. A man running three kilometers in a suit that doesn't fit, lungs burning, heart hammering, and the other man waiting like he's been waiting eight years too. The dimness of that scene—the shadows, the cold wind, the sweat mixing with something else on Wei Zhenye's face—it's all rendered in this almost tactile way. You can feel the temperature dropping. You can hear the traffic horns blaring in the distance. Inside the apartment, the details accumulate: the water dispenser, the cigarette pack that's empty, the lighter that's black casing with pure brass, the tie being loosened, the glass of water held with both hands. These objects carry so much weight. The lighter especially—it's the same one from the video call, and now it's in He Zheng's hand, passed between them like a torch. Eight years of distance reduced to the exchange of a lighter. The world feels lived-in. Beijing traffic, the charity gala, the apartment that's familiar yet strange to Wei Zhenye—every location serves the emotional arc. Nothing is decorative. Everything is necessary.
"Don't make the bed, I'll just go get a washboard." I literally screamed when I read this. This is the kind of scene that makes you roll your eyes so hard but also smile like an idiot at your phone. Fu Tingyuan, a man who clearly has power and money and could just buy his way out of any situation, is offering to KNEEL ON A WASHBOARD because his wife is mad at him. And the best part is Chen Tang's response: "You're not allowed to kneel on the washboard! Even if you kneel, I won't stop being angry! Who told you to bully me!" She's still mad but the fact that she's engaging with him instead of ignoring him completely is basically progress in their marriage. Then he drops the line that completely disarms her: "Wasn't I just afraid that you would be bullied again and wanted to arrange an experienced agent for you? If I didn't do that, would you have agreed?" And just like that, her anger melts. She offers him the bed back. This entire exchange went from comedic to genuinely sweet in about thirty seconds. The author knows exactly what they're doing here. Chen Tang's anger was never really about the agent—it was about feeling like she wasn't consulted, like decisions were being made for her. And Fu Tingyuan understood that immediately. He didn't argue, he didn't get defensive, he just explained his reasoning in the sweetest possible way. That's emotional intelligence, people. Also, the fact that she said "Th-then you can sleep on the floor for one more night" with that stutter? Adorable. The whole CP chemistry between these two is built on this foundation of him seeing her and her slowly learning to trust him. It's not love at first sight, it's trust at first sight, and that's way more interesting.

This is actually pretty great so far. I wish there was more system interaction and more development in the free chapters. Sadly, I dont pay to play so I'll have to hope for a release elsewhere.
