I would put it this way... It left me with a sense of emptiness, filled with sorrow and anger. The protagonist, our female lead (FL), is central to the story. However, I believe the emperor is more of an antagonist rather than the male lead. Initially, I didn't anticipate any romantic connection or emotional development between them, and indeed, none seemed to exist from FL's point of view. I was hoping for FL to seek revenge, perhaps by taking down General Sun, but unfortunately, she passed away before that could happen. I also feel deep sympathy for her husband, as they shared a loving life, only to have it shattered by the emperor's actions.

Honestly, I struggle to comprehend why anyone would support him in overthrowing the throne, given he had no rightful claim or birthright. The previous emperor, FL's father, was decent but unremarkable, which isn't uncommon. I wished for the emperor to suffer a tragic fate, like having his legs crippled or being stabbed in the heart. Sadly, he died peacefully in old age without ever truly loving FL, or so it seems. Both FL and her daughter were well aware of his obsession. I can only hope that in the afterlife, he receives a fitting punishment for his sins.

Honestly, I didn't want to read this at first because I didn't want to get emotionally invested, but there were no major spoilers, so my curiosity got the better of me. For those who come after, here's a heads up on potential spoilers:

The prince, our ML, was involved, and while he didn't directly harm her family, he took them hostage to control her. He also sent her ex-husband, who gave up his position for her, to the battlefield, where he tragically died. During the invasion, her older sister suffered a horrifying assault by General Sun, which MC witnessed before her sister's suicide.

Throughout, it's unclear if ML truly loved MC or if it was more of an obsession mixed with guilt. The lines between love and power dynamics are blurred. The line "I could seek his power and status, but not his love" suggests he may have loved her in a conditional way, knowing his affection wouldn't last once the situation changed.

Many suggest she should have taken her own life, but with family hostages, it wasn't a viable option. The tragic ending sees her poisoned, unknowingly, by her own parents as part of a triple suicide pact.

While the story might not be as intense as others, like "The Blind Concubine," it still packs an emotional punch due to its rapid pacing. If you're curious, give it a read, but be prepared for a bittersweet conclusion.

It's indeed sorrowful, but it doesn't overwhelm with tears; rather, it leaves an aching void within. As a spoiler, although she passes away, on a subtle level, I believe that was what she desired – to atone for her past transgressions and find peace in accepting the consequences of her sins.

This is a well-crafted narrative that delves deep into angsty themes. If you prefer light-hearted or uplifting stories with a happy ending, this content might not be your cup of tea. However, if you appreciate emotional intensity and relate to those who enjoy angsty stories, then this is definitely for you. I would rate it a 2 out of 5 if the main characters had a conventional happily-ever-after, as the melancholic portrayal of the male lead seemed fitting. The protagonist's suffering until the end was an integral part of the narrative.

This is a poignant short tragedy that illustrates that historical narratives are far from mere fairy tales. I empathize with FL - her tragic fate was sealed by a single decision, which left her burdened with immense emotional turmoil, guilt, love, and hate. It's difficult to judge her actions, as she was likely unaware of the dangers she faced due to her upbringing.

As for Xu Tangan, I'm still unsure if he holds the lead role, but his character is portrayed as self-centered, prioritizing his desires over others. His obsession led to FL's untimely demise, reminiscent of an overbearing ruler. At least, his demise brought some closure, and I find solace in the fact that he didn't achieve lasting happiness either.

If I were in FL's shoes, I would choose Xu Zunyu over the supposed ML any day. Their tragic ending tugs at my heartstrings, and I genuinely hope for a happier outcome for them in an alternate reality where their paths cross.

However, the most affecting part for me was the revelation of FL's sister's fate, which left me deeply shaken, as it surpassed my imagination.

Despite its brevity, the story manages to delve into the complexities of its supporting characters and tells a compelling narrative. I highly recommend giving it a read! >_<>

If I could lay eyes on him, I'd give him a good slap. To Mr. Xu, may your life be filled with misfortune, and may you drown in others' contempt. While numerous reviews commend the book, I would personally describe it as rather average. The plot's potential was unfortunately not fully realized, and I didn't experience any emotional depth, as I didn't cry while reading. I much preferred "Unrepentant" by comparison.

To be honest, FL comes across as foolish, and ML is even more so. I admit, I enjoy angsty stories, but this particular one didn't resonate with me. It's baffling how some people rate it 5 stars; it was a major snooze-fest for me.

The female lead's portrayal was consistently overconfident and convinced she was making the right decisions, which was highly frustrating. And the ML was an extreme character – an obsessed individual whose choices were utterly unrealistic and exasperating. Reading this was a painful experience.

Sure, if you find yourself needing an emotional outlet, this book might be just right for you. It reminds me of "Eastern Palace" with its ruthless, ambitious, and self-centered main character. Thankfully, there's no happy ending for him. I really enjoyed it, and I'm grateful to the translator for their work.

It's truly remarkable; I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of it. However, I deducted one star because I didn't experience the emotional depth I expected – I'm unsure why that was the case. Normally, stories like this evoke tears, yet throughout, my emotions remained rather unresponsive.
