I am the translator of the novel. I was initially hesitant to write this because I didn't want readers to approach the novel with preconceived biases. However, some reviews have not been to my liking, and from my perspective, I will try to highlight both the strengths and weaknesses of the novel.
Firstly, the main character (MC) transmigrates into a "Gao Fushuai" (a wealthy, handsome, and capable individual) in a novel. For those who haven't read it, this character was originally meant to be cannon fodder or a stepping stone for the protagonist's rise. However, with the help of a system, he can choose to stay on his original path or alter his destiny.
The MC is portrayed as cruel, cunning, manipulative, and interested in forming a harem, but he does not seek to destroy the world or cause harm to others. His unique viewpoint sets him apart from typical villains, who often have grandiose ambitions of world domination. He simply wants to enjoy life, and that's it.
I want to clarify that this is not a stereotypical urban harem novel. The story is a continuous confrontation between the original protagonist and our new protagonist. Unlike the common trope of a hero saving a heroine and winning her heart, this novel takes a different approach. The heroines have multiple interactions, and the relationships develop gradually, allowing readers to form bonds with each character. Notably, no heroine has reached 100% favorability with the protagonist, which adds depth to their relationships.
A very important point to consider: In the real world, dating a girl and impressing her with conversation skills, consideration, and a rich background would likely win her over. The second heroine, for instance, comes from a poor background. How many girls in the real world wouldn't be impressed by a rich, handsome guy spending time with them? The novel dedicates six chapters to exploring her background and the protagonist's efforts to impress her. She shows a slight favorable impression, but it's far from like or love. Yet, there are reviews criticizing this. For heaven's sake, imagine Tony Stark meeting a poor girl on the street and spending the entire evening with her. Would she not have a crush on him? Please use some common sense.
The author has stated that achieving 100% favorability is impossible for any genuine human being, as it implies unconditional listening and understanding, which is unrealistic. This adds a layer of realism to the relationships in the novel.
The novel features significant character development for the heroines, making their interactions engaging. However, the protagonist himself undergoes less character development. Even the "original protagonist," who acts as the antagonist, experiences character growth.
Of course, the novel has its flaws, and I acknowledge them. One major issue is how smoothly the main character adapts to the new setting, with no transition period. This is the biggest flaw in his characterization. Another significant drawback is how easily everyone accepts his sudden brilliance in various fields. A minor issue is the excessive praise from supporting characters, though I understand this might be a cultural difference. In places like India or the broader subcontinent, such reactions are not uncommon, although they can be exaggerated in the novel.
On a scale of 5, I would rate the novel slightly above 4 points. It is not a perfect novel, but it is a good one with some flaws. It belongs to a genre where the focus is on the dynamic between the antagonist and the protagonist, rather than on a large ensemble cast that readers might forget.
So, please, don't just review a novel without thoughtful analysis. Reviews are meant to serve as guides for other readers.
