I highly recommend this novel for its well-crafted plot that keeps you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The story immediately draws you in from the very beginning with the main character, Yu Ran, who is a mystery himself. When the male lead enters the story, even he is wary of the main character. From there, the story moves along quickly.

This was a tightly woven story where the author did not waste time on unnecessary details. The side characters were great additions, and the world-building was truly impressive, featuring both smart and quirky spirit animals.

Even though the story is plot-heavy, the romance is present and well-developed. I really appreciated how the romance was built gradually, through a deepening understanding of each other.

An all-around fantastic story! The twists and turns made it hard to put down. Definitely 5 stars!!

10/10. Excellent pacing, world-building, compelling characters, and an intriguing plot line.

Spoiler
The main character (MC) is a double agent dispatched by the alliance marshal to expose corruption within various government sectors. While the MC is overpowered, the method of unraveling the mystery is very realistic, featuring false leads and piecing together evidence scattered throughout the book. The romance develops naturally as the MC and the love interest (ML) grow closer while collaborating on the investigation. As they work together, the ML gets to know the MC better and faces life-and-death situations alongside them. This deepens their bond, ensuring they understand that each will stand by the other without hesitation, no matter what challenges arise.

I love MC and ML, I appreciate that they didn’t rush into trusting each other and took their time to develop their relationship!

I really enjoyed the world-building and the secondary characters; I loved everything about it, muak!

Spoiler:
The most heartbreaking part was the MC's past with his parents. He was raised with so much love... the author was really cruel :((

I can't say anything else other than read this!!!! Great story, good pace, good romance, everything is just right. I can't say much else than read this!

The story itself isn't very long, only 99 chapters, which isn't as lengthy as other Chinese novels. The translation is pretty okay and understandable, and the machine translation is also decent. It’s stretched out quite well, and I wasn’t bored at all throughout the entire read. I actually finished it in one sitting. , it’s a very satisfying story, and you probably won’t be disappointed.

The side characters are cool as well; you won’t be annoyed with any romantic drama or non/dubcon in this story. Some of the characters were a bit mysterious, and their revelations surprised me. It was overall very fresh and enjoyable for me.

The main character (MC) is very cool. He isn’t innocent or a wimp; he’s cunning and confident. He’s very charming, a bit evil at times, but he has his reasons behind his actions. He’s great at acting and quite powerful, but not so overpowered that the story revolves entirely around him. He knows how to restrain himself and when to let loose. This aspect might not appeal to everyone, but I enjoyed it. His spirit foxes are very funny, especially in their interactions with the male lead’s (ML) eagle.

The male lead (ML) is great. He has his suspicions about the MC, but these are gradually dispelled through the MC’s clever ploys. He’s a very charming character and also quite funny. Him and his eagle make for an entertaining duo. The ML is rational, while his eagle is a bit dim-witted, and their interactions are fantastic, especially when the MC’s foxes get involved. The ML is equally amusing both before and after he figures out that the MC is acting.

There aren’t many cons I can point out. Maybe the ending was a bit too fast, and the conflict between the MC and the villain resolved too easily. Some people might find more issues, but that was really my only note. The story deserves its high rating, in my opinion, but please give it a read and see if you like it!

Wow!! This is such an amazing novel!!

I want to say first, for this review, that this is a VERY plot-heavy novel. Like, SUPER plot-heavy. I had to take some breaks while reading it because I can only handle so much dense plot in a single day, lol.

But that doesn’t mean the story is bad, of course; it just depends on what kind of story you’re looking for. Personally, the attributes I’d give this novel are ACTION, INTRIGUE, and DECEPTION.

Super fun! The plot is a roller coaster, but it all adds up in a very logical way! There aren’t any plot holes at all, and the author carefully lays everything out step by step.

I really love how, despite the MC being very powerful, the story and plot still make it so that he has to use every bit of that power to survive. So, there’s never a point in the story where it seems like he is powerful just for the sake of being powerful—it all serves a purpose!

I love the slow progression of the romance, too.

**Spoiler**
The romance doesn’t really kick off until the MC tells the ML the truth, which is about midway through the story. After that, the ML gets to know the real MC and not the act he puts on, and they make slow but steady progress.
**[collapse]**

**Spoiler**
Funnily enough, the only "loose end" in this story is that the MC has never told the ML he hates sweets. At least, not in the main story. I haven’t read the extras yet, so I don’t know if it happens there, but I like to imagine the ML’s expression when he finds out, lol.
**[collapse]**

Despite the romance having a slow progression, everyone is so busy with the plot, which just never rests, that there are very few moments where you wish the romance would have more of an impact. In the first place, this isn’t a story you should read if you’re looking for something with a bigger emphasis on romance than plot.

The romance is still very satisfying, especially by the end!

**Spoiler**
The MC is always so busy with the plot that he doesn’t have time to think about romance or feelings. But towards the end of the story, after the ML confesses, he begins to think about it and doesn’t spend any time on denial like "No! I can’t like him!" or whatever. He is just confused since he never liked anyone before. So, when he comes to a decision, he tells the ML right away. It’s very refreshing compared to some other stories that always waffle back and forth between whether they like the ML or not or whether they should say something or not.

, it’s a fantastic story! Highly recommend!

A very good story, it’s fast-paced, with just the right amount of drama—not too much to be overwhelming. Perfect for when you have some free time but don’t want to dive into a complex plot. ? It’s just a shame that there are no raws for the extras to be found anywhere ? If anyone knows where I can read the extras, please let me know. ^_^ Thank you in advance!

It's a nice novel. As others have mentioned, the interaction between the animal manifestation and the guide/sentinel is really cute. The story has a wide array of characters, ranging from foes to friends.

Ran Ran’s past is quite tragic, especially considering his age and experiences. It’s almost too dramatic with him becoming a
double agent.
However, it’s heartening to see that he finds someone who will stand by him through thick and thin, whether the situation is dangerous or not. I’m genuinely happy for him.

One downside for me is the use of stereotypes. For instance, at the main character's wedding, it’s not husband and husband but husband and wife.
Another example is the dynamic where the guide is often in a supporting role while the sentinel is always on the front lines. This is particularly evident in the twins’ situation when they swap identities to become a guide and sentinel. I had hoped that when Ran Ran revealed his true identity, the role of the guide would evolve, allowing them to fight alongside their sentinel. Ran Ran himself is a prime example of how a guide can be incredibly powerful and take on frontline roles.
Despite these issues, I still enjoyed the novel. , it’s a decent read, and I rounded my rating up to 4 stars.

I really enjoy the pacing of this story. I wish the rating was higher so I could have found it sooner. This is one of the best BL novels I've read so far. It's concise, but the plot is well-crafted with solid conflict. The romance is absolutely charming.

I really enjoyed this novel. The plot was straightforward, and I was impressed by the main character's intelligence and thoughtfulness.

Spoiler: I read the extra part, and it was very satisfying. Everyone had a happy ending, including the addition of two little sentinel twin girls and a guide. I also loved the moer story; it was truly beautiful.

It’s a very well-written story, although the ending feels a bit rushed.

The scheming and plotting are particularly well-executed, and navigating the multiple layers of manipulation is truly impressive. The story does a great job of tying up almost all its loose ends, introducing the main villains early on without being overly obvious. This allows readers who are keen enough to deduce the plot by around chapters 30 to 40, although with less detail than what is revealed later. However, it still leaves room for surprises and twists while providing the satisfaction of looking back and understanding how everything unfolded. The plot isn’t just left hanging in the later chapters.

The romance is also well-handled, with a naturally developed and realistic conclusion that fits the characters' personalities. Even when plot events bring the characters closer together, it feels organic and not forced. The relationship development is well-integrated into the overall narrative, avoiding any sense of randomness.

, it’s a very engaging story. While I found myself more drawn to the intricate plot and the charming personalities of characters like YR, TC, and QX, the romance, though slower to develop, is still well-crafted.

So, I guess, don’t read if you don’t appreciate a good plot? Lol.

Regarding the villains, I was slightly disappointed with some of their characterizations. I would have liked to see more depth in their depravity. One of the main antagonists is particularly well-developed, and I enjoyed the insight into his twisted nature. However, it’s a bit disappointing that this aspect isn’t explored further, even though the characterizations are not lacking. They are not flat, but their development and backstory could have been more detailed, which is something I wish the author had delved into more.

TL;DR: A solid sci-fi novel. The plot is stronger than the romance, but both are well-developed. I would definitely watch an anime adaptation of this story.

If I were evaluating this as a sci-fi novel, I’d be pulling my hair out, but treating it as a fantasy setting made it super fun and unique. I don’t usually enjoy spy-type stories or "hiding true abilities" narratives because I’m always hoping they get found out, but in this story, I actually liked it.

The mystery unfolds logically and steadily, keeping you hooked and wanting to read more. The characters are both intelligent and likable, avoiding obvious tropes. Plus, I appreciate stories that feature animal companions.

, I recommend it, even just to switch things up, as it’s quite different from the usual setups.
