Mary's father, a minor gentleman farmer who is unwilling to manage the family land. He worked at Baring Bank in London and six years ago opened his own private bank on Cheapside Street. The bank eventually goes bankrupt, forcing him and his wife to flee London. He mortgages the bank but claims not to have mortgaged the ancestral property at Longbourn.
