Da Dan is a child character in the story, one of the Da Dan children who go up the mountain with the other children to gather pig fodder for work points. The children earn one work point per basket of fodder. Da Dan calls An Ruoyan Auntie and receives candies from her when she visits. He is described as hardworking, with An Ruoyan noting that even the kids worked harder than she did. His grandma warned the children not to go too deep into the mountain for fear of encountering tigers. Da Dan also informed An Ruoyan about where mushrooms and wild vegetables could be found.
