They couldn't afford potentially getting stuck inside the bag and not being able to run. They all laid down on top of the bags and Casper grabbed the flashlight from Chance, ready to flash it at whatever he'd see. Not soon after, the others began sleeping and Parley began snoring. The sound was quite disturbing and Chance woke up for a moment, placing his pillow over her head which seemed to clog the noise. He looked at Casper, gave him a thumbs along with a wink, and went back to sleep. Casper laughed a bit, but covered his mouth to not make noise, turning his attention back to the darkness. He began to regret the fact he was not tired. Still, he shrugged it off and began flashing around the room.
My best friend Emma and I were together since kindergarten. Our lives were full of ups and downs, happy and sad moments, broken hearts and crepes for their smoothing.
"I'm Rose! It's my birthday! Let's go in!" the young girl said as she reached out her hand to the boy…
Tony sighed, setting down the wrench as he responded, "I know-"
Can we just take a moment to appreciate the visual storytelling in this book because the author is NOT playing. The scene where they're limping through the overgrown path — 'the trampled grass had already revived with life, even growing more lush than before' — this is such a subtle way of showing Su Xiaoyin's healing power without any exposition dump. She's using her abilities constantly, getting weaker with each use, and the environment literally responds to her. That's worldbuilding through action, not through paragraphs of explanation. Chef's kiss. And the imagery of her making a makeshift needle and thread from hemp? 'The green hemp quickly withered in her hands. With forceful rubbing, she barely managed to control it with her power to pull out hemp threads.' I could SEE this. The desperation, the resourcefulness, the fact that she's sewing buttons while half-dead from power exhaustion — this is survival mode meets domesticity and it's strangely beautiful. The mountain setting itself feels alive. Thorns, weeds, the small path known only to locals, the voices calling from the forest — it's claustrophobic and dangerous, which makes every moment of tenderness between the characters feel earned. When Yuan Songzhi walks ahead clearing the path for her despite being injured, the contrast between the hostile environment and his protectiveness is devastating. Then the confrontation scene with Lin Limei and the brigade members — the shifting gazes, the silence after Lin Limei's accusations, the way Su Xiaoyin's dirty face and wounded forehead make her look 'all the more pitiful' — this is all visual storytelling at its finest. The author trusts the reader to understand the dynamics without spelling everything out.
Okay so let me just say this confrontation scene is absolutely chef's kiss. The way Su Xiaoyin walks back to the village with a whole crowd of gossipy aunties in tow? Genius. Pure narrative genius. She didn't just come back to cry and be pitied — she came back with witnesses, with evidence, with a plan. And the best part? She completely flipped the power dynamic. The Lin family thought they could bully her into silence again, but she was like 'nope, today we do this publicly.' The plot twist about Lin Tianyang cheating with that Xue girl? I literally gasped. And Su Xiaoyin didn't just drop the name — she gave full details. Surname, father's position, mother's position. That's not something you just make up. The author really did their homework on how information works in a small village setting. But what really made me slap my thigh was the Lin Limei reveal. This girl who supposedly 'reborn' too — or at least acted like she knew things — completely fell for the trap. She had no idea about Doctor Liu's note. Her reaction when Yuan Songzhi mentioned the kettle? Priceless. 'Her pupils contracted sharply.' That one sentence told me everything about how panicked she was inside. And then the grand finale — severing ties. Su Xiaoyin asking for literally nothing extra, just what was hers. The Lin family's reaction of 'relief mixed with discomfort' is such a realistic portrayal of guilty people. They wanted her gone but also wanted to feel like the good guys. Classic. The only thing I'd change? I want to know MORE about how she got the evidence from Doctor Liu. That's a thread I want pulled later.
And all that glitters is gold

The water's getting warm so you might as well swim
I need to get myself away from this place
Well the years start coming and they don't stop coming
Only shooting stars
