I have to talk about the food descriptions because the author really knows how to make you feel the poverty and the scarcity of this era. Let me just quote this: "thick and just right, every sip rich with the aroma of millet. Beside it, golden cornbread buns—plain at first glance, but full of grainy fragrance when bitten into. With a small dish of finely chopped pickles—salty, savory, delicious." This is breakfast. BREAKFAST. And it's described with more love and detail than some romance novels describe dates. The wild vegetable corn porridge, the glistening green vegetables, the cornbread buns that look less appealing because they're leftovers from the morning—all of it paints this vivid picture of a household stretching every yuan. And then contrast that with Qian Ertian's wedding banquet: sixteen tables, ten dishes per table, desserts! Xiao Wu's reaction—"our whole village doesn't eat this well even at New Year!"—that single line tells you everything about the economic reality of this world. The fact that the second uncle's family came and only gave twenty cents per family as gift money and felt like they were celebrating New Year early... that's not just humor, that's worldbuilding. You understand the entire social economy of this village in one scene. The author doesn't need to explain the commune system or the work point system explicitly—just showing us people skipping work for a free feast tells you everything you need to know.

It starts out as smut with idiot MC, and (at chapter 137) ends with a hyper stoic MC that trusts no one. It feels like two different stories. The first couple of chapters it’s about the system he gets and by chapter 100 the system is completely forgotten. The characters are not fleshed out and emotions and deep painful subject matter is handled poorly.
