He essentially vanished from the face of the earth, and now six or seven years later, a faulty wiring complaint and a cracked slab of cement have dragged him back into the light. But what makes this case genuinely tense isn't just the mystery of who killed him — it's the sheer impossibility of finding answers in a world that has already moved on. The building's residents don't know each other. The landlord is overseas. The only person who remembers Xiao Wei is an old woman who initially tried to play dumb to avoid police involvement. And Li Heng's own team is short-staffed, understaffed, and being hounded for clearance rates. 'Even with seven hands and eight feet, we can't keep up' — one colleague's complaint echoes the entire premise of this story. The stakes feel real because the system is already failing. Li Heng is a rising star, yes, but she's also isolated. She doesn't have a home to return to. She doesn't have the luxury of a well-staffed, well-resourced team. She has a case, a skeleton, and a nursery rhyme, and she's going to have to make it enough. What I find most compelling is how the author makes you care about finding the truth for someone who has been forgotten by everyone — including, apparently, his own family. No one came looking for him. No one reported him missing. He was erased, and now Li Heng is the only one trying to put him back together.
The narrative offers a highly original and captivating storyline brimming with intricate details and well-crafted world-building. Although the main character doesn't encounter significant obstacles, the creative solutions he employs to address his challenges consistently keep the reader entertained.
