In the year 1001 A.D. a witch named Esther turned her family into a new species that would come to be known as Vampires. For a thousand years Mikeal and Esther plotted against their children in an effort to kill their bastard son Nicklaus, but time after time their efforts failed and that's because Esther made a mistake when she made her family into vampires. She turned a boy named Jason Bennett into a vampire as well who is Niklaus's best friend.
