Struggling to support his dementia-stricken mother and neglectful father, French-American Maurice Burdett is drafted into WWII and shipped out to a cold, isolated landmass called Attu island to take it back from the invading Imperial Japanese forces. After being left for dead in the heat of battle, Maurice forms a risky alliance with a person who could very well destroy them both: a conflicted enemy soldier, Isamu Maruyama. Laden down with stoic expectations and struggling to uphold his father's image, Isamu is deployed to Attu to invade the island as part of the war effort. Only, it doesn't quite go to plan: the Allies arrive, things head South, and -- in a moment of panic -- he deserts his comrades before their final stand. Stranded with no other comrades left, he forms a tense alliance with Maurice in order to get back home.
