The Genius Professor Wants An Easy Life

Actually a pretty good novel if you take away the smut. The smut scenes weren't that interesting to me, so I skip most of those chapters and continued along with the story.

Honestly, my initial interest in the book was solely due to its captivating cover, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a letdown. Initially, I found the pacing too rapid, but upon closer inspection, I realized that the issue lied in the lack of depth in character interactions. A prime example is when Van sets out to prove himself, Hans suddenly becomes overly effusive in his praise, which comes across as forced and insincere. This pattern repeats throughout the story, with other characters constantly showering Van with praise, which fails to engage me as a reader and detracts from the protagonist's journey.

Despite the superficial character dynamics, I must admit that I found the setting, particularly the magic system, intriguing. There were moments where the novel delved into the intricacies of the magic, making it an enjoyable read. However, I doubt I'll eagerly anticipate updates; instead, I might read it as a mindless escape.

The narrative contains some promising elements, with intriguing concepts for architectural innovations and occasional revelations. However, the plot often stagnates, relying on unexplained innate abilities that seem to effortlessly clear obstacles. Initially, the author seemed to have a coherent storyline, but it appears to have been abandoned in favor of sporadic additions.

The protagonist's development lacks progression; despite being portrayed as exceptionally weak from the start, they remain stagnant, never reaching the pinnacle of power. This lack of growth makes the story predictable and monotonous, as their omnipotence becomes a clichéd aspect rather than a compelling narrative arc.

Saying that the novel is universally good or bad might be an overgeneralization, but I can offer a suggestion to those reading: approach it with a lighthearted mindset, akin to watching a poorly translated slice-of-life anime, because it has its charming quirks. The story does have elements I appreciate, such as the warm family dynamic between Karl (I prefer the K-version) and the well-balanced gender representation at the academy.

However, the execution falls short. As another commentator pointed out, the dialogue between characters feels flat and lacks depth, with everyone seemingly fawning over the protagonist's intelligence. There are also numerous instances where character decisions seem illogical, like a supposed villain blindly trusting the MC to heal their group's leader when they're gravely ill – it defies credibility.

Despite these flaws, I personally find the world-building intriguing, evoking a video game aesthetic, similar to Harry Potter. Yet, it lacks the emotional depth that made Harry Potter so captivating, despite some inconsistencies in the setting.

Honestly, the book's summary doesn't quite align with the main character's actions. He claims to desire a simple, low-key lifestyle, but his plans and his gift for public speaking often draw attention to his accomplishments, turning him into a constant hero. It seems like he's more focused on showcasing his prowess as a professor and his heroic feats, seemingly forgetting his initial goals. The pace is rapid, with characters' attitudes towards the MC shifting quickly from dislike to admiration. There's a repetitive pattern where minor antagonists try to bring him down, only to be defeated by him, followed by another villain, and so forth.

Despite these elements, I'm still intrigued enough to continue reading because I enjoy stories with a teacher protagonist, which aren't that common. However, if you're looking for a low-key MC or a slower-paced plot, this might not be the right choice for you.

Although it may not qualify as a literary masterpiece, the early and middle sections of the story were enjoyable, and I must admit I liked it. However, the ending started to deviate and the power dynamics felt less convincing. The execution of the finale was disappointing, bordering on rushed. If only the pacing and writing had been more polished, I'd rate it higher, perhaps 4.5 stars. But despite its flaws, I still recommend giving it a read. This book offers an experience where even if you don't finish it, you'll find satisfaction in the journey. It's one of those stories where knowing the ending isn't crucial for a fulfilling read.
