I like this one. It could be a gem; emphasis on could.

Even giving it a 2 is already very, very, very generous on my part. So what gives? Well, it's the grammar.

No, not the grammar of the original (I don't know Japanese well enough for that), but the "translated/edited" version we're reading here is the problem.

It is mentally exhausting how many times I had to correct the grammar in my head. It's depleting my mental energy faster than I anticipated.

[**Edit: I think I was deluded into thinking this was actually edited, and now correctly realize that this was just a machine translation that was slightly polished. They (whether solo or a group) patted themselves on the back and called it a day. My points below make more sense in light of this MTL revelation.]

My biggest gripe with the grammar issues is that the main character’s name changes 2-3 times, and the increasing difficulty in identifying who is currently speaking. This is compounded by the lack of cues indicating whether the speaker is engaging in internal monologue or external dialogue.

And perhaps the worst atrocity of all is the simultaneous use of first and third-person sentence structures, making it seem like everyone is suddenly schizophrenic and a company of two has turned into a group of 3-4 people. This is made even more egregious by the boastful addition of "editor" all over the place, often alongside "author," despite this clearly being a translation—now that’s an ego check if I’ve ever seen one.

But I digress. Despite my generosity and the valid criticisms I've pointed out, I still stand by my opinion that this could be a (niche) gem if it were cleaned up by an actual editor. In that case, I could give this a 3 or 4 stars (though a 4.5 would be necessary).

Main story is honestly just good stacking material, a bit aggravating because of the author being basically an amnesiac but alt ending is extremely good..

I was hoping for at least a little romance, but it should be fine either way.
