In a controlled voice to maintain anonymity, I replied, "Yes." I was certain he wouldn't recognize my true identity, despite my suspicion that he might suspect something.
He complimented my recent bout, saying, "I enjoyed your fight, especially how you took down that opponent. It was quite impressive." His enthusiasm was almost comical, as if he saw me as an irresistible treat.
Mocking him, I said, "I'm glad you liked it. I suppose you placed a bet on my victory." I turned to leave, hoping he would continue talking to himself, but his persistent nature caught up with me. He grabbed my arm, apologizing.
"I apologize for that," William offered. "Would you care for a drink and perhaps lunch? I've found that after a good fight, one gets quite famished."
I couldn't help but laugh at his attempt to impress me, shaking my head. "I appreciate the offer, but I'm not currently involved with anyone. Enjoy your evening," I said, jesting as I made my way towards the exit. I hoped my rejection was clear.
