What I meant is not that it is bad or anything. Any additional skills are good, but their love for English is a bit exaggerated. In my country learning English as second language is pretty much compulsory and everyone will know it to a certain extent, at least a few words. Even my grandma tried to learn just because it is useful. But in novels it is often praised not as must-have, but elite skill, like learning piano or calligraphy. For example in-laws despised the bride because of her low background, but then her aunt went on stage and congratulated her in English instead of Chinese and they don't despise the bride that much anymore. Even though her aunt is just a teacher and don't really use language skills anywhere else. But if she was physics teacher - no way she will get the same treatment. Such exaggeration is a bit absurd and really common, that's why I started talking about it
